Can You Pick The Mansplainer?

Social media is where Darren's mansplaining shines. He will @ you, slide into your DMs, and comment on all of your FB posts. In fact he takes all of your social media activity as a personal invitation for him to do some hardcore reacting, giving his own opinions and thoughts on a thing you but mentioned.

Dude is a mansplainer

Sebastian starts a lot of sentences with "Just to play devil's advocate..." He thinks of himself as an intellectual force to be reckoned with, pushing conversations to the next level by offering contrarian opinions — even when he doesn't believe them himself — just to be "challenging." If you can't handle it, well, that's on you.

Frank is pretty much always giving off a "don't-kill-the-messenger" vibe because it's not that he's the bad guy here. He's "just asking questions." "Where exactly does your information on the wage gap come from?" he might want to know. "Can you show numbers that prove your claim about women in management positions?" Hey, don't get so heated; he's just asking questions.

Warren is a smart guy. He's well-read. He has a diploma from a university. That's why he thinks he knows way more about your job, hobby, or area of interest than you do. Sure, you're an experienced teacher with a master's degree in education but he's still going explain the history of education policy to you. Literally. Year by year.

Rick is a bit of a conversational top. And he's the interruptiest interrupter that ever interrupted. And he's mastered many techniques. He might simply just start speaking over you. Or he might cut in with something like "Not to cut you off, but—" and proceed to make his point, cutting you off. You can get in about one word for every 20 of Rick's.

Mo has no time for your ~social justice warrior~ nonsense, and he wants you to know that. Even though you only see him a couple times a year, he uses each opportunity to engage you in a conversation about a topic he knows you're passionate about so that he can explain that your opinions are responsible for stifling intellectual discourse and free speech.

Ed, simply put, is a gem. He listens closely and actively, doesn't interrupt, trusts and even sometimes defers to your opinion. Someone give the women in Ed's life a high-five. Or a Nobel prize.

Dude is \*not\* a mansplainer!

Whatever you do, don't let on that you're really into a thing (especially a thing usually thought of as a guy thing, like sports or video games) in front of Jamie. Why? Because he'll make you prove how into it you really are by demanding you perform on demand your knowledge of the minutiae of the thing. It doesn't matter that you \*can\* recite the starting lineup of the 1986 Mets or write a history of Nintendo from memory. He won't stop still he stumps you.

Not only is Nick a pleasure to have a conversation with — he talks, he listens, he asks great questions, allows himself to be challenged by your answers — he also comes to you for advice and not in a needy or ungrateful way. Dude just thinks you have a lot of wisdom and experience and sometimes asks if you can help him think through a thing. He totally understands if you're too busy to chat with him but when you can he's gracious and respectful.

Dude is not a mansplainer!

Here's the thing about Patrick. When you first meet him, he seems like the gentlest soul — an artsy, sensitive type. But once you start talking about books and music, he's shocked — scandalized, really — to hear that you haven't read Kerouac or David Foster Wallace or listened to the entire discography of Animal Collective (including the B sides, obviously). He endeavors to explain to you everything you're missing in art and culture by not being familiar with the art created by his favorite dude icons. He won't stop until you promise to take home his dog-eared copy of On The Road. DON'T DO IT. BE STRONG.

"That's technically not patriarchy per se," Bryan might say. Or this inception-esque mansplaining: "Actually, that's technically not mansplaining..." He owns a t-shirt that says "This is what a feminist looks like" and btw, thinks you're misapplying the word "misogyny."

You'd think Al has formal dramatic training because he basically speaks only in monologues. He doesn't seem to need any reaction or interaction from you when he talks and dude. Does. Not. Stop. Talking. And no matter how many times you perform all the social cues that signal "I'M NOT INTERESTED AND IN FACT AM VERY BORED" like checking your watch, yawning, and avoiding eye contact, Al doesn't even come up for air.
