Devi Vishwakumar From "Never Have I Ever" Is One Of The Best Teen Characters We've Had In A Long Time And Here Are 13 Reasons Why

I should've been more like Devi when I was in high school!

Hi, people of the internet. I'm Salimah, and I looooooove teen dramas*!

    Netflix / Via giphy.com

This is exactly what I look like when I'm sitting down in front of a new teen drama!

*Teen dramas: Never Have I Ever is technically a comedy-drama, but I'm still putting it under the teen drama umbrella!

I probably spend about 90% of my time watching new teen dramas, as well as rewatching my faves, tbh.

    Devi and Fabiola
    Netflix / Via giphy.com

The other 10% of that time, I'm rewatching Grey's Anatomy because I love that show. And before you ask, no, I'm not tired of watching it, thank you. But, anyway, that's beside the point.

Anyway, my whole point is that I'm a teen drama STAN! I've watched so many, and even though it's superrrrr hard (nearly impossible) to narrow down all of my favorite teen drama characters in order from most-loved to kind-of-loved...

I do know that Devi Vishwakumar from Never Have I Ever definitely has a spot in my top-ten best teen drama characters I've ever watched onscreen.

She clearly deserves a spot there, and I'm going to tell you 13 reasons why:

And to celebrate the return of Never Have I Ever for Season 2, I'm looking back at Season 1 for 13 reasons why she clearly deserves a spot there. (Which means this post is 100% spoiler-free for Season 2!)

    1. Her style is everything I wish I dressed like when I was a teen:

    Netflix

I truly aspire to dress more like her each and every day.

I mean, just look at the material!!!

Devi wearing an orange cardigan, stripe tank top, and some distressed blue jeans
    Netflix

I know it may look like just a basic orange sweater, with a striped tank and some jeans, but I've wanted this exact sweater since the first season came out. So, in my eyes, it's a pretty neat sweater!

    Exhibit B on Devi's super-simple, yet super-stylish fashion choices:

Three images of Devi wearing different outfits. In the first image, she's wearing a floral dress. In the second one she's wearing a red button up shirt and a gray plaid skirt. In the third she's wearing a pink tank and gray plaid skirt
    Netflix

Her looks aren't EXTRAGVAGANT like other teen drama characters (think Blair Waldorf from Gossip Girl), BUT they look like things that actual teens would wear. So maybe teen dramas dress the characters in the fanciest, most expensive clothes and think that helps them pass for an IRL teen when it doesn't.

Yeah, there was some Disney-esque layering that was done, but it was done in the right way and actually looked decent.

    Netflix

Just look! My high school self would've definitely worn this (if I wasn't forced to wear a uniform every day). But anyway, we move on.

    2. Next up on the list, she's not perfect and is a pretty close image of what being a teenager is like IRL.

    Netflix / Via giphy.com

I feel that often with teen dramas, they want the main character to seem super perfect and put together, and they'll throw in a flaw here and there. But with Devi, we see her make plenty of mistakes. We're also seeing her work through the process of grieving and trying to find healthy ways to express herself, which is stuff that happens to every teen IRL, but it does not always show on TV. It's super relatable and refreshing to see.

    3. She has pretty good taste in guys, TBH:

Devi and Ben kissing and Devi and Paxton kissing
    Netflix

I know this seems super simple, but many teen drama characters have awful taste in the guys they like. Love triangles are a teen drama staple, and while some of them can be annoying or forced, Devi's love triangle includes two really great contenders that actually make sense. Honestly, if I were Devi, I would still have no clue who to pick.

    4. The entire storyline with her dealing with her grief is one of the best I've seen on a teen show in a looooong time.

    Netflix / Via giphy.com

Usually, the character's biggest struggle is that they don’t know which college to pick or which boy to date, but Devi has those typical teen struggles and real-life pain that everyone goes through, which gives her much more depth than the usual teen drama character, IMO.

I'd be completely surprised if there was someone who didn't cry during the beach scene:

    5. She's super hilarious and always has the best comebacks.

Tell me another character that is sassy and makes it fun/entertaining the way Devi does. I'll wait.

Here's a compilation of amazing comebacks from Season 1, just in case you needed extra proof:

    6. Her confidence is everything I aspire to have, even in my twenties:

    Netflix

Sure, she has her moments where she's insecure (just like any person IRL), but she doesn't let those moments hold her back from getting want she wants.

    7. Speaking of that, Devi is definitely the type of person to go after what she wants no matter how unattainable that goal may be:

Devi asking Paxton to have sex with her
    Netflix

At the end of Episode 1, she goes straight up to Paxton and boldly proposes having sex. Sure, it's a bit cringey how she went about it, but the principle that it was brave AF still stands. I love how she just went for it and had no second thoughts whatsoever. I think we all could be a bit more fearless like her!

    8. She takes initiative in learning new things that she knows nothing about:

    Netflix

Devi is a super-smart girl and knows a lot of things about basically anything. But, when she didn't know something, she dedicated time to learn it. For example, when she and her friends did their little study session on all things about sex. How better to learn about sex stuff for the first time than with your friends, right?

    9. She may get annoyed at her family at times, but she's always super supportive when needed:

    Netflix

When she finds out that her cousin Kamala is secretly dating someone other than Prashant (her potential husband), she keeps her secret and tries to hide it from her mom 'cause she wants Kamala to experience love. We love a good cousin that can keep secrets!

    10. She embraces her culture while also showing how it can be difficult to intertwine more than one culture into your lifestyle:

    Netflix

It can be super challenging for a lot of POC to juggle your culture and the culture of where you live (Indian culture and American culture, in Devi's case). It can be hard to find out where exactly you belong, and it's both fantastic and refreshing to see Devi try to dive more into her culture while also learning to navigate both her Indian and American identities.

    11. She's super ambitious and "whip-smart."

    Netflix

Devi's whole "feud" with Ben is fueled by their need to be at the top of their class. Finally, a teen drama character that cares about doing schoolwork and getting good grades. We love to see it!

    12. She's incredibly helpful and will drop anything to help someone in need:

    Netflix

During Episode 8, she dropped everything to help Paxton's sister, Rebecca, do a photo shoot for her fashion designs. And I know this instance is a double-edged sword, since she did end up ditching her BFFs in their time of need for a guy who was barely speaking to her and his sister, but we're just going to focus on the positives for now. She could've gone about it in a better way, but she was still helpful to someone nonetheless.

    13. And finally, she's super talented and doesn't spend ALL of her time thinking about boys:

Devi about to play the harp
    Netflix

OK, OK, OK, I know Devi spends more than half of the show talking about boys, but it doesn't feel like her life revolves around them, mainly because she has so many other facets. She is dealing with her grief, she has issues with her friends, she's trying to get into an Ivy League school and do all that she needs to do to ensure that happens, and she plays the freaking harp! She has many different things about her and other things going on that it doesn't feel like she only cares about boys, even though she did for a good percent of the time.
