Out Player Michael Sam Wrote A Thank-You Letter To Mizzou

“When I came out last month, I did it with the confidence that my Mizzou ‘family’ would always be there for me.”

1. “To my fellow University of Missouri students, athletes, faculty, alumni and supporters” is how football player Michael Sam addresses a letter published today in the Columbia Missourian.

2. Sam, who came out last month and stands to become the first out NFL player in history, is auditioning for NFL scouts today at Mizzou’s Pro Day. The letter, in part, reads:

From my first recruiting trip to the University of Missouri, I felt something extraordinary and special — something I didn’t feel anyplace else.

I didn’t have a name for it then; I do now. It’s called family.

3. On Feb. 10, the day after Sam came out, students spelled out his last name in the front zone of Mizzou’s football stadium.

4. The following week, Sam received a standing ovation from his alma mater when he returned to campus to accept the 2014 Cotton Bowl Trophy with his team.
