Megan Thee Stallion Explained Why She Wanted A Minimal Glam Look For Her Harper’s Bazaar Cover

"I’m just getting more comfortable with myself and more comfortable with my skin."

This week, fashion magazine Harper's Bazaar revealed that rapper Megan Thee Stallion was this month's cover star.

The photos of Megan are gorgeous and feature her in a stripped-down, simple look with an orange backdrop.

Introducing our March cover star, @theestallion! The rapper is at the top of her artistic game, finishing college, and defending her right to be young, Black, and free: “Can’t nobody tell me how to be the Hot Girl.” https://t.co/m0rEa8FfjW

And the cover itself shows Megan in a black ensemble in a candid-ish pose.

However, some people criticized the photos:

@DanielNewman i feel like black people need photographers who understand our lighting. she’s not well lit at all. i noticed the same thing in the simone biles vogue shoot. hope the next time meg gets a cover she’s allowed more creative control and can hire a photographer.

Yeah so that Meg The Stallion Harper’s Bazaar cover is not it. Y’all going to stop not caring or treating the quality of black women like it doesn’t matter on editorial spreads. Not sure who the art director is nor do I care but PLEASE do a better job. Damn.

They insist on making us look casket ready 😩 Meg is dynamic, effervescent. That Harper’s shoot doesn’t reflect it. And it’s not revealing some new aspect of her. So why are we here? Her selfies have better lighting and styling than this, damn.

@oliviapupcake The photos are so bad. The angles, the lighting, like wtf were they thinking? This one in particular, she looks so UNCOMFORTABLE https://t.co/eLstIqiTUw

Megan discussed the importance of a stripped-down moment for her in the cover story.

“I’m realizing that I don’t have to be in full glam every time you see me, because I’m just getting more comfortable with myself and more comfortable with my skin,” Megan said.

The photographer, Collier Schorr, also shared how involved Megan was in the selection and editing process of the shoot.

"A most remarkable experience making pictures with Megan Thee Stallion, who discussed each picture and edited afterwards with me," the caption read.

"Total collaboration as it should be to make together new images of her at this moment in her life," they added.
