Sherry, the mom behind the blog Hand Me Downs, recently wrote a blog post about a shocking exchange she claims she had while shopping with her son Gabe, who has Down syndrome.
Sherry told BuzzFeed News that she was shopping with Gabe in January when a cashier made a comment that really stung her. Sherry wrote on her blog:
The cashier that gave me sad eyes and spit poison in a whisper:
"I bet you wish you had known before he came out. You know they have a test for that now…"
Shock, horror, hurt and fury coursed through my body. I considered jerking her over the register and beating her senseless. I looked her up and down, I could take her….
Instead I used wit: I smiled a crazy lady smile "I know right?! It's so much harder to get rid of them once they come out. Believe ME I've tried…" Jackpot! Her mouth dropped open and she stared at me in shock. I leaned over the register and whispered to her:
"What you're saying is that it's okay for me to kill him while he's inside, but not outside? In my book there isn't a difference. For the record, we knew EVERYTHING about him during my pregnancy. He is our son now and he was our son then. There is no way in hell that I would let any harm come to either of my children. Including during the time that they're so ridiculously considered disposable."
Since publishing it last month, Sherry's blog has been spread all over the internet. She said she never expected it to travel so far. "My family and friends are all thrilled and have been encouraging me for years to share my heart," she said."
Sherry didn't specify what grocery store the incident happened in, but she clarified that the cashier didn't say what she said maliciously. She said that her tone was almost sympathetic.
"I responded how I usually do," Sherry said. "She was surprised, and tried to say more, but I stopped her, paid for my stuff, and left."
She said that her blog post wasn't meant to be an abortion debate either. She merely wanted to encourage others to pause before judging someone based solely on how they look.
