Outlander Life Lessons From Season Two

It's been months since the season two finale of Outlander. We learned a lot from season one and a heck of a lot from season two. Here are some of the more important lessons.

Good or bad choice - own it.

There are times in life when you just have to grab the bull by the horns, do what you want to do, and live life with no regrets. Just move out of the way when said bulls come a-knocking at your door.

Get used to disappointment.

You have to realize that it doesn't matter how badly you want something, sometimes you just aren't going to get it. Like ever. My dad always says you can wish in one hand and crap in the other and see which one fills up first. (Yeah...he's a real philosopher.)

Every once in awhile, assess your place in life.

It's good to stop and reflect on how you are doing in life. Sometimes you'll be able to look around and pat yourself on the back for the good progress you've made. Other times you will be frustrated, scared, and wondering why after everything you've done you are still at the verge of a war you've been trying to stop.

Whoa...that one was deep.

That's what she said.

Sorry, that was immature.

I blame Rupert and Angus.

Good friends are essential.

What would life be without a Rupert or Angus by your side? Cleaner? Smarter? Perhaps, but a lot less fun.

A word of caution, if you have an Angus, I don't care if he says, "What's mine is yours." I'm pretty sure the goat is tainted goods. Pass on that kid.

You say it best, when you say nothing at all.

Allison Krauss hit that nail on the head with that one. Believe it or not, it's okay to just shut up. However, if you are like Jamie (and me), schooling your features is a whole other battle. My RBF has achieved Olympic medalist status.

Seriously expression ever from season two.

Things/people are not always as they seem.

This season revealed a more human side to the villainous Black Jack Randall. Just like BJR, some people seem evil and have some good. Then there are those notorious jackwagons who seem good but have no redeeming qualities AT ALL. Buyer beware.

*Sidenote: BJR - He's so evil but he's so sexy. I want to kiss him and then castrate him with my bare hands. Of course, there is a chance he's into that, so...

Surprise yourself and others and try something new.

We all get in a rut now and again. It's good to try out something new. Learn a new skill, broaden your fashion horizons, make a new friend, try a new (ahem) beauty treatment. You never know how smoothly things will go - pun intended.

(Talk about giving new meaning to the phrase "Shock the monkey".)

Broaden your vocabulary.

Whether you are addressing a boardroom, classroom, bedroom, or courtroom, be more creative with your language. I'm pretty sure Angus didn't have more than a 3rd grade education but he schools us all.

*Sidenote: I tried Angus's comment out...but my mom felt quite insulted. Another lesson? Know your audience.

Brush up on your romance knowledge.

Somethings are classic and will always be winners. Others need to be thrown and and burned like a nasty lice-ridden-powdered wig. Unless "hanged side by side" is a euphemism for something else, I'm gonna say this one is a no. Wait...does this have anything to do with Ariana Grande's song?

Never underestimate the power of a simple gesture.

Too often we're worried about the right thing to say or do. Often times, a simple word, touch, or action is all that is needed. Don't overthink. I always say, use the KISS method - Keep It Simple Stupid.

Of course, if Jamie is involved, turn the KISS method into a plain ol' kiss and I'd be one happy girl.

Never underestimate the power of passion.

Simplicity does have a place in our lives, but oh man, sometimes we need passion. Whether it is passion for work, passion for dreams, or passion for a perfectly honed male specimen who rocks a kilt bare-chested better than anyone I know...what was I saying? Oh yes, passion, it is an important driving force to make things happen.

Life's too short - buy the dress.

How many times do we pass something up because it is too bold or out of our comfort zone? I'm talking about more than dresses here, people. Stop waiting for the perfect time, perfect fit, perfect circumstances and do what you want.

Good gracious, I love that dress! I wonder if Terry Dresbach would adopt me.

Take life one step at a time.

Whether you've decided on making a major life change or just trying to make it through tough times, just think of Frank's amazing cheek creases and take one more step. And then another. And then another. Before you know it, you'll be where you want to be. Unless, where you want to be is in a fictional story setting as Claire so that you can reunite with Frank. If that's the case, you're totally SOL.

Never say never.

Just like Jamie said, "Never is a very long time." Nothing - within reason - is impossible. You have to believe in order to make things happen. I mean, come on, if Jamie could believe Claire was a time traveler instead of witch and rely on her knowledge of the future, you can believe in yourself.

Opportunity will show up in the strangest places.

What may seem a tragedy - a hopeless situation - can actually be for your good. Keep an open mind and your wits about you. When in doubt, ask yourself WWCD (What Would Claire Do?) You could be falling back in time or thrust forward to the present. Don't give up. Never stop looking.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got to see a Highlander about a stone.
