With Halloween just around the corner, drop in to Ariyapala Mask Museum to get a few ideas on your scary costume! Sorry, no bunnies, cat woman or fire-fighter costumes in here. If you enjoy story-time, ask the owner or guide for the story behind each mask.

Tsunami Photo Museum

This museum was built to commemorate those who lost their lives in the devastating tsunami of 2004, which claimed the lives of thousands on the coasts of Sri Lanka. Heartbreaking pictures are posted on the walls of this little house to serve as a sombre reminder of the dreaded day. Although many Hikkaduwa hotels suffered during the disaster, many have picked up business and are better than ever!

Marine Archaeological Museum

From boat models, ship wrecks, ancient relics and realistic figures of cavemen, this museum is nestled within the quiet pathways of the Galle Fort and is a great way to escape the heat of the day. If you want to get more in touch with marine life that isn’t in a glass box or preserved, head over to Hikka Tranz by Cinnamon to feed some sea turtles!

National Museum

Eager to learn about the occupants who lived in Sri Lanka ages ago? The National Museum does a clever job of preserving artefacts while depicting this captivating history of the colonial era.

Don’t worry; no one’s going to quiz you on how to pronounce the name of this museum. Once home to the famous author, it has been converted to a museum which depicts everything that revolved around the life of Martin W; from things that inspired his work to things he loved, and used while living here.
