C-Span Guest Educates A White Prejudice Caller On How Not To Be Racist

Heather McGhee, the president of a public-policy organization informs a white racist man how he can become less prejudice.

Last week Thursday, on C-Span's show Washington Journal, an openly racist white man called in to ask guest Heather McGhee how he can improve his negative racial views to become a better American.

McGhee who currently serves as the president of Demos, a democratic organization that advocates for economic equality, came on the Washington Journal to talk about public policy. However, McGhee was shocked when she received a call from a man who lives in Chicago named Gary. The caller stated:

I am a white male. I am prejudiced. The reason it is is something I learned. When I open up the papers, I get very discouraged at what young black males are doing to each other, and the crime rate. I have different fears. I try to avoid that. I come off as being prejudiced. I just have fears. What can I do to change, to be a better American?

The president of Demos thanked Gary for his honesty and embraced him for admitting that he has racial prejudices. McGhee responded to the caller's question by encouraging him to get to know black families. She explained to Gary that the majority of black families are not involved in crimes or gangs. In addition McGhee pushed Gary to research the history of African Americas in the USA and to build relationships with other racial groups. McGhee stated, "In order to be united across lines of race, class, gender and age we have to get to know one another. We are always surprised when we build relationships across that."

Many twitter users are celebrating McGhee response to Gary.
