This Is How Much It Costs To Rent In Your Capital City

Surprise! Sydney is expensive. But the rest of the cities are actually quite surprising.

It's more expensive to rent a room in Darwin or Canberra than it is in Melbourne, and Sydney costs twice as much as Adelaide, according to new research.

The research by rent.com.au shows the median rent for a single room in Sydney is $250/week compared to just $125/week in Adelaide.

The next two most expensive cities to rent a room in are Canberra ($183) and Darwin ($175), followed by Melbourne ($163), Brisbane ($150), Hobart ($135) and Perth ($130).

Darwin is the second most expensive city to rent a property in - you'll pay $470/week there, followed by Canberra ($430), Brisbane ($400), Melbourne and Perth (both $380), Adelaide ($340) and Hobart ($330).

Overall, most cities remained steady or rose only slightly quarter-to-quarter, with Sydney's median rental price actually going backwards a few dollars.

Australia's most expensive suburb is Seaforth on Sydney's northern beaches, with a median weekly rent of $1200, while the most affordable suburb is South Australia's Kilburn, with a median weekly rent of $255.
