It's more expensive to rent a room in Darwin or Canberra than it is in Melbourne, and Sydney costs twice as much as Adelaide, according to new research.
The research by rent.com.au shows the median rent for a single room in Sydney is $250/week compared to just $125/week in Adelaide.
The next two most expensive cities to rent a room in are Canberra ($183) and Darwin ($175), followed by Melbourne ($163), Brisbane ($150), Hobart ($135) and Perth ($130).
Sydney is also the most expensive city to rent a property in, with the median price coming in at $520/week, but the results are slightly different for other states.
Darwin is the second most expensive city to rent a property in - you'll pay $470/week there, followed by Canberra ($430), Brisbane ($400), Melbourne and Perth (both $380), Adelaide ($340) and Hobart ($330).
Overall, most cities remained steady or rose only slightly quarter-to-quarter, with Sydney's median rental price actually going backwards a few dollars.
Australia's most expensive suburb is Seaforth on Sydney's northern beaches, with a median weekly rent of $1200, while the most affordable suburb is South Australia's Kilburn, with a median weekly rent of $255.
