A Mother Is Warning People After A Thermomix Gave Her Second Degree Burns

A Perth mother says she received second degree burns after the Thermomix she was using exploded.

Danika Jones was cooking pasta in her Thermomix, an all-in-one kitchen aid, earlier this year when the lid flew off, splashing her with scolding hot liquid.

"I had popped the pasta sauce ingredients in the Thermomix using the same recipe I've used every week since I bought the machine more than two years ago," she said.

"Towards the end of the process, it was pureeing the sauce when it started making a funny noise and vibrating."

“I walked over to turn it off and as I did that, it just exploded – the lid blew off and hot liquid went everywhere, all over me. The pain was intense.”

Jones was taken to hospital by ambulance, where she was treated for second degree burns to her chest, stomach and arms.

In October 2014, Thermomix recalled the TM31 model, saying that on rare occasions, when a user switches from a high speed to the "lid open" setting, hot liquid may splash out. But the company claimed that a new seal would fix any issues.

Jones says the seal on her device had recently been replaced by Thermomix, but she's now calling on the company to issue a full recall of the TM31 model.

“This was an awful ordeal which I wouldn’t wish upon anyone else,” she said.

“So many people use a Thermomix and they need to know how unpredictable they can be and how dangerous they can become when they malfunction.”

Law firm Slater And Gordon has taken on Jones' case.

“Danika has suffered serious injuries despite following the manufacturer’s instructions while using her Thermomix,” lawyer Nakkie Le Roux said

“Preparing meals in a Thermomix has become an everyday activity in many kitchens all over Australia and it is very concerning that such an incident has occurred."
