At around 12.20am on Tuesday morning the two men, both aged 28, were believed to have been riding on a metal shopping trolley down Coogee Bay Road in Sydney’s eastern suburbs.
It's believed one of the men was inside the shopping trolley, which police estimate was travelling at 80km/h (50mp/h), while the other was riding on the back.
The trolley is thought to have crossed to the wrong side of the road where it struck a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.
The driver, aged 45, and a passing cyclist provided CPR, but one man died at the scene. The other man has been taken to St Vincent's Hospital with serious injuries. The driver was also taken to hospital for mandatory testing.
Police investigations are continuing and anyone who witnessed the crash is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
