A 22-year-old British backpacker has been rescued during a routine traffic stop after a harrowing, two-month ordeal in which she was allegedly kidnapped, raped, and held hostage.
On Sunday afternoon police pulled the car over for a random traffic stop on the Warrego Highway in outback Queensland, and found the female driver visibly distressed and suffering from facial injuries.
“It appears she was terrified and not able to hide that," police told AAP.
Police allegedly found a 22-year-old man hiding in an alcove of the vehicle.
He has already faced a Roma court on charges including four counts of rape, eight counts of assault occasioning bodily harm, four counts of strangulation, and two counts of deprivation of liberty. He's also facing drugs charges.
According to police, the pair met on January 2 before embarking on a roadtrip, which quickly turned violent, with the alleged offences occurring over that period in a number of locations across Queensland.
The woman has been treated for non-life threatening injuries including facial fractures, bruises and cuts to her body.
The man has been remanded in custody and will reappear in court at a later date.
