34 Things You Probably Didn't Know About "Breaking Bad"

1. After watching Season 5, Episode 14 — "Ozymandias" — George R.R. Martin called Walter White a bigger monster than anyone in Game of Thrones and vowed to "do something about that" in his next book. Eek.

2. Aaron Paul has never had any acting classes. During a Reddit AMA he said: "I always just thought, 'Hey, pretend like you're being someone else and that's all there is to it.'"

3. Due to the success of the show, some drug dealers have actually started adding blue dye to their crystal meth in an effort to "brand" their product.

4. Laura Fraser — the actress who plays Lydia Rodarte-Quayle — is, in fact, Scottish. You can hear her talking about Season 5 (in her real accent) here.

5. Nearly two decades before landing the role of Walter White, Bryan Cranston was in Power Rangers! Below you can hear him as the voice of the evil Twin Man.

6. And that's not his only link with the show. He found out years later that the Blue Ranger — real name Billy Cranston — was named after him. Kinda had to be the blue one, right?

7. If it weren't for the 2007–08 writers' strike, show creator Vince Gilligan and the other writers were planning to kill off Jesse in Episode 9 of the first season. Thanks to the strike this episode never happened, and it was decided that Jesse was much too valuable a character to lose. Yeah, bitch!

8. Gilligan wanted the terrifyingly brilliant Tuco to be the bad guy for all of Season 2, but the actor — Raymond Cruz — landed a major role in The Closer and was therefore unavailable.

9. Forced to come up with a new villain they introduced the anti-Tuco, Gus Fring.

10. On the final day of filming for Season 5, Bryan Cranston got a Breaking Bad tattoo on the inside of his finger.

11. According to Anna Gunn, who played Skyler White, Cranston cried for 15 minutes after filming the scene in which Walt let Jesse's girlfriend Jane Margolis die.

12. Talking about the same scene, Aaron Paul said: "When that day was over, I couldn't be happier that it was over because I really, truly felt I was living those tortured moments with Jesse."

13. The two Salamanca cousins are actually brothers, only one of whom had acted before.

14. The first, fourth, 10th and 13th episodes of Season 2 all have black and white teaser intros, and when you combine the episode titles you get Seven Thirty-Seven / Down / Over / ABQ. Foreshadowing the plane crash at the end of the season.

15. In a scene that Vince Gilligan called a "one-in-a-million shot," Bryan Cranston managed to throw the pizza onto the roof in the very first take for this now-iconic moment.

16. The polarizing 10th episode of Season 3 — "Fly" — was made primarily for budget and scheduling reasons. Due to the fact it only used one set and two of the major characters it was much quicker and cheaper to produce than other episodes.

17. Ironically, Christoper Cousins who plays Ted Beneke needed a stunt man to fall and break his neck because he had just recovered from spinal surgery.

18. The makeup and visual effects team from AMC's other hit show The Walking Dead were drafted in to help with the scene in Season 4 episode "Face Off", during which half of Gus' face is blown off.

19. In Season 2 episode "4 Days Out," Jesse asks if they're going to build a robot to save them — in the final episode, "Felina," that's pretty much what happens.

20. When filming the episode during which Walt kills Mike, the entire crew wore black armbands to mark Jonathan Banks' final episode.

21. Baby Holly is named after Vince Gilligan's girlfriend, Holly Rice.

22. Walt Jr. actor RJ Mitte does have cerebral palsy, but not as severely as his character and can walk without crutches. In fact, he had to learn how to walk with them for the show.

23. Marius Stan — aka Bogdan, Walt's boss at the car wash — has a Ph.D. in chemistry. He decided to go into acting in his forties, with Breaking Bad being his first role.

24. There are 62 episodes. The 62nd element is Samarium, a drug used to treat pain in cancer patients.

25. The coordinates of the spot that Walt buries the money are actually those of Q Studios in Albuquerque, N.M., where the show was filmed.

26. Walt Jr. is the only major character that Jesse never meets.

27. There are 270 deaths throughout the five seasons of Breaking Bad.

28. Cranston got the role of Walt after Vince Gilligan showed AMC his performance in The X-Files episode "Drive." Not coincidentally, this episode was written by Gilligan.

30. The show was originally meant to be set in Riverside, Calif., but filming was moved to Albuquerque for tax reasons.

31. As Walt drives back to New Mexico in the final episode, he listens to a song called "El Paso" by Marty Robbins. It tells of a man who returns to the town where he is a wanted man to find the woman he loves: Felina, from whom the episode gets its name:

32. As well as being an anagram of "finale," some have pointed out that Felina can be split up into Fe Li Na — the chemical symbols for Iron, Lithium, and Sodium. Or in other words: Blood, meth, and tears.

33. During a fight scene with Tuco, Aaron Paul was knocked unconscious and required medical attention.

34. In "Felina" the camera lingers on the New Hampshire plates to reveal the state motto, "Live Free or Die", which is also the name of the Season 5 premiere. It also foreshadows the outcomes of the two main characters. One lives free, while the other...
