1. Kenyan runner Hyvon Ngetich was leading the Austin marathon and half-marathon after 23 miles on Sunday when her body gave up on her due to exhaustion.
Determined to finish the race, however, the 29-year-old crawled over the finish line on her hands and knees, eventually finishing third.
2. Ngetich refused the wheelchair and help offered by race volunteers as she dragged her body to the end of the race.
3. At one point she stopped, totally exhausted, just metres from the finish, but she found the strength to carry on.
4. After the race, the event’s director, John Conley, told Ngetich: “You ran the bravest race and crawled the bravest crawl I have ever seen in my life.”
He told her he was adjusting the prize money for the race so she got the same money as she would have done if she had finished second.
5. Ngetich told CBS affiliate KEYE-TV: “For the last two kilometres, I don’t remember. Finish line, I don’t remember.”
She added: “Running, always you have to keep going. You need to die running.”
Ngetich eventually finished the race in three hours and four minutes.
