Avon and Somerset Police are looking into the incident.

Police have launched an investigation after a video appearing to show a police dog sinking its teeth into a man’s neck appeared online.

The footage, taken by a passer-by, shows the man lying topless on his front in a road in Weston-super-Mare in Somerset.

The dog, which is being held on a lead, then lurches forward and appears to bite the man’s neck.

It seems the original video was uploaded to Instagram before being added to YouTube.

Assistant chief constable Louisa Rolfe, of Avon and Somerset Police, said officers had been called to the Regent Street area in the early hours of Saturday to deal with a "large fight involving a number of people".

“During this incident, a man was bitten by a police dog as he was being arrested,” she added.

"We are aware of a YouTube clip and comments on social media channels about this incident."

"The incident has been referred to our professional standards department for thorough investigation as we are keen to understand what happened. The YouTube clip is only a few seconds long and doesn’t show events before or after the arrest.

"As this is a live investigation, it would be wrong to comment further.”
