The Spaniard eventually finished 56th, with Slovakia’s Peter Sagan winning the stage.

Teruel appeared to take the embarrassing mistake in good humour, later tweeting: "I hope to gain victory, luckily no one has seen. Hahahahahaha.”

Me pudieron las ganas de victoria ,menos mal que nadie lo ha visto jajajajajaja

Britain’s Sir Bradley Wiggins was crowned the overall winner of the Tour of California on Sunday, with compatriot Mark Cavendish winning the final stage.

Speaking afterwards Wiggins said: “I had an incredible team around me. Without those guys I would not be in this position. They took the strain all week.

He also said he hopes to ride in this year’s Tour de France, the event he won in 2012, but admitted it would be in support of last year’s champion Chris Froome.
