That's apparently what happened to Sam Firth recently when she found a massive rat in her garden in Belsize Park, north London.

According to the Daily Mail, Firth believed the rat was between 16 and 18 inches long.

"It was bizarre, I was sat having a cup of tea when I spotted the rat staring back at me. I'm afraid to venture outside, the gigantic rodent had no fear," the Splash picture agency quoted Firth as saying.

After a number of UK news websites published Firth's pictures of the rat, the images began trending on Facebook.

People on Twitter were both horrified and totally unimpressed by the pictures.

My new annoyance is the giant rat hysteria that's hit our house. Every night a new urban legend and they're always conveniently cat-sized
