26 Hilarious Truths About The “Empowered Indian Woman”

“A woman should always walk two steps behind… The valet.”

Way, way back in February of 2012, some students at IIM Kozhikode created the perfect meme: The Empowered Indian Woman.

It sought to expose regressive stereotypes of Indian women and then subvert them to suitably reflect India’s many strong, independent women instead.

The meme is similar in structure to the “Successful Black Man.” Its creator, Tony Sebastian, told BuzzFeed in an email that it began as part of a wider local effort to celebrate women in Kozhikode. “IIM Kozhikode organises a mini marathon each year as a means to promote awareness about an issue of social relevance. In 2012, the chosen theme was empowerment of women.”
