Why You Should Be Watching The 100

Sci fi + badass ladies + action = epic TV

Posted on

The 100 is that post-apocalyptic, sci-fi show on The CW that you may have heard about. It's become a bit of a cult favorite, and after a ridiculously long hiatus (that had fans going 'seriously CW??') the show is finally back with season three and just as great as ever.

So what is it that makes this show so great? Well, let me tell you.

All the ladies.

When I think of The 100 most of the characters that come immediately to mind are ladies: Clarke, Lexa, Octavia, Raven, Abby, Indra, etc. How many shows can you say that about? Not enough, that's for sure.

There are plenty of great guys on the show as well, but the importance of having an action-packed, sci-fi TV show where it takes more than one hand (or one finger) to count the female characters cannot be overstated, because it definitely does not happen often enough.

LGBT Representation.

Heck yes! There are canon bi, lesbian, and gay characters on this show. And no one makes a big deal out of it! That kind of representation is so important and so rarely shown on network television.

It's dark. Like, really dark.

I mean, the whole premise of the show is that 100 juvenile delinquents are sent down to a presumably toxic Earth because they are expendable. Then you have the story lines where a twelve year old murders another kid and where a bunch of teens torture a man for information. And that's just season one before things get really dark!

I don't know why people are so into dark, apocalyptic shows (think: The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones), but there is something about them that we just find fascinating. Maybe it's the draw of survival stories or watching the depths of experience the human spirit can withstand. Either way, if you like darkness, angst, or drama, this show definitely delivers!

Good sci-fi.

As a science fiction lover I'm always psyched when I hear about a new sci-fi TV show, but-- let's be honest-- they don't always deliver. But, believe me The 100 does. It's set in a used universe (it is post-apocalyptic, after all) full of futuristic tech, and the worldbuilding in particular is excellent.

So. Much. Action.

For a bunch of teenagers who only just arrived on Earth, these kids sure do manage to get into a lot of trouble. Fortunately they're also very scrappy (remember: juvenile delinquents), so they can usually hold their own against whatever enemy is currently trying to exterminate them.

See Octavia slide. Watch Octavia slay.

But there are a few lighter moments, too.

Like when Murphy asked for a weapon but got two rocks to hit together instead. Or when we found out that Clarke was a former party animal on the ark (or, okay, at least that used to play some drinking games).

Let's talk about ships, baby.

This show has so many great ships. Clexa, Linctavia, Bellarke, Jonty, Kabby, and so many others. Seriously, The 100 is basically the show that launched a thousand ships. And we love it.

But relationships are never the most important thing.

On this show, love takes a back seat to survival. In fact, one of the important questions the show asks is whether it's possible to do more than just survive in a world like this-- and the answer isn't always very clear cut.

Friendships are really important, though.

Genuine friendships, especially between ladies, are not always very well represented. So the fact that the relationships between friends are more important than almost anything else on this show, and the fact that several of those friendships are between women, is really awesome. I definitely hope the show explores these even more moving forward.

There's never a dull moment.

Things are never boring on The 100. From the moment the dropship crash lands on Earth the 100 have to fight to survive. The storylines are always interesting, frequently surprising, and constantly have you on the edge of your seat. There are no filler episodes on The 100. There's way too much happening for filler. Every episode is just a nonstop thrill ride.

Don't believe me? Go watch the first episode and see if you aren't hooked before it's through.

And if you aren't convinced by now that The 100 is one of the best shows on TV right now, then I don't know what you look for in a show, because if it's got good storylines, badass ladies, and some science fiction elements then, let me tell you, I am there.

Watch seasons one and two of The 100 on netflix and don't miss new episodes on Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW.
