Surviving College Dining Halls After The Holiday Season

After almost an entire month of being home for the holidays and eating some delicious home cooked meals, it is now back to reality as you head back over to college. Here are a few tips to help you survive college dining halls for the rest of the year.

1. Grab the fruits

Most, if not all, college dining halls have available fruits placed for students to grab and eat. On the way out make sure to grab yourself a banana, an apple or whatever is being offered for on-the-go. It could be a perfect healthy snack to eat after indulging this holiday season, or even just as breakfast for when you are running late to your 10 AM.

2. Spice it Up

After indulging on delicious home cooked meals , it’s very hard to now go back to see the same fried foods that you once saw before leaving for the holidays. If your not feeling the same old dishes that are being available, check out some other stations that you might have not explored yet or even just simply ask the chef or the cooks for any off menu availabilities.

3. Try the Salad Bar

Yes, you read that right. And I know that many have ignored it since arriving at college, but hitting up that salad bar might actually introduce you to new ways to make lunch or dinner times fun. Salad bars include an abundance of leafy greens, veggies and healthy protein such as eggs and beans to include with your salad. Making your own perfect creation might be fun and something for you to look forward to everyday.

4. Make a Stir Fry

A stir fry is a great way to incorporate that home cooked meal without actually being home. If your college offers a station in the dining halls, make your way down to that line and show off those cooking skills. You might even impress that girl/boy with how well you can cook. What’s great about a stir fry is that you can add whatever you would like. Whether it’s tofu if you are going for the vegetarian option or chicken or beef, you are able to create a masterpiece using already pre cut up veggies.

5. Breakfast for Dinner?

Some nights you might find yourself roaming the dining hall unsatisfied with anything that you see. Have no fear, because you can never go wrong with having breakfast for dinner. The most important meal of the day can be eaten twice right??? Well... who cares, sometimes just a bowl of Fruit Loops does the trick to satisfy your hunger. If not, try hitting up that waffle machine and make yourself one.
