Your mom is a no-fuss gal who would love nothing more than to catch up with her beloved children over soup in a bread bowl. When you hit your hometown Panera this holiday weekend, show her you care by treating her to a pastry or cookie.

Have lunch at Panera Bread

You and your mom share a love for good deals and free samples, so why not engage in an activity that involves both? Go on Saturday — once the Black Friday shoppers have cleared out — and don’t refuse when she offers to buy you a year’s supply of batteries and a couple jumbo packs of contact solution.

Go shopping at Costco

Going to Target with your mom when you go home for a visit is a time-honored tradition. Wait until midday on Black Friday — the hardcore fans will be out by 10 a.m. — and then head in with your mom to stock up on cute holiday decor, cold-weather gear, gifts for family members who aren’t present, and approximately $150 in shit you’ve suddenly realized you can’t live without.

Spend a few hours shopping at Target

While your mom loves you with all her heart, she doesn’t exactly hate being an empty nester. Since you’ve moved out, she’s discovered some new hobbies, made some new friends, and has big plans for the house. Now if only you’d do something about all this crap so she could convert your bedroom to a yoga studio. The woman has done so much for you; the least you could do is hunker down with some trash bags this weekend and make her dreams come true.

Clean all of your junk out of your old bedroom so she can use the room for something else

Your mom can’t turn down a day of pampering, which is why she’d love for you to join her for a trip to the salon. You’re probably overdue for a haircut anyway, so you might as well see your old stylist while you’re in town and get in some bonding time.

Get your hair and/or nails done together.

Going to the mall over Thanksgiving weekend is a tradition for a reason — it’s a time-tested ritual that, despite the crowds, can actually be pretty fun. Visit your favorite department store, buy more scented candles than any one person could possibly need, and don’t say no when your mom offers to buy you the pricey item you’re eyeing as “an early Christmas present.”
