Here's How To Turn Citrus Peels And Leftover Herbs Into Garbage Disposal Cleaning Pods

Because your sink doesn't have to smell like rotting trash!

Lately I've been making an effort to create less trash and to create less food waste. I've gotten a lil compost bin and beeswax wrap, and I'm trying to get more creative with the food scraps I would normally otherwise toss.

If you're looking to do the same, or if you just want an easy way to make your garbage disposal not smell like, well...garbage...these little pods made with citrus peel and/or leftover herbs are a really easy place to start!

Here are three different ways you can make them:

1. Lemon-Lime Garbage Disposal Pods

Ingredients

(Makes 16 pods)

1 lemon rind, cut into pieces

1 lime rind, cut into pieces

Distilled white vinegar

To make:

1. Place 1-2 pieces of lemon rind into each slot of a 16-slot ice cube tray.

2. Place 1-2 pieces of lime rind into each slot of the ice cube tray.

3. Fill each slot with enough vinegar to form an ice cube.

4. Freeze until ready to use.

5. When ready to use, place one pod in the garbage disposal, turn on the faucet, and run the garbage disposal, allowing water to flow the whole time.

2. Grapefruit Rosemary Garbage Disposal Pods

Ingredients

(Makes 16 pods)

½ grapefruit rind, cut into pieces

4 sprigs rosemary, or any leftover herbs you have around

Distilled white vinegar

To make:

1. Place 1-2 pieces of grapefruit rind into each slot of a 16-slot ice cube tray.

2. Sprinkle a bit of rosemary into each slot.

3. Fill each slot with enough vinegar to form an ice cube.

4. Freeze until ready to use.

5. When ready to use, place one pod into the garbage disposal, turn on the faucet, and run the garbage disposal, allowing water to flow the whole time.

3. Classic Lemon Garbage Disposal Pods

Ingredients

(Makes 16 pods)

1 cup baking soda

1/2 cup iodized salt

2 tablespoons lemon zest

4 tablespoons lemon juice

To make:

1. Combine baking soda, salt, lemon zest, and lemon juice in a medium sized bowl. Stir to combine.

2. Spoon mixture into 16-slot ice cube tray and pack each pod firmly down with a spoon.

3. Allow to dry overnight in a warm, dry area, then transfer to an airtight container.

4. When ready to use, place one pod into the garbage disposal, turn on the faucet, and run the garbage disposal, allowing water to flow the whole time.
