Sol de Janeiro’s Brazilian Bum Bum Cream is the only lotion I will spend over $20 on and let me tell you why.

I am a devout drugstore-lotion follower. I have enough of a problem saving money thanks to my compulsive shopping habits, so when I’m confronted with two versions of a moisturizer that often yield eerily similar results, I’m on that CVS brand like white on rice. When I got a sample of this stuff from Sephora, however, that all changed. I couldn’t get enough of the lotion’s scent, so I immediately went online to order the real deal. I started with a 2.5 oz. jar, and when that disappeared all too quickly, I graduated to the larger, 8.1 oz. container.

    I was hooked.

And look, I’m not the only one! The lotion has racked up over 1,100 five-star reviews on Sephora, including these promising ones below:

"I got this in a tester and fell in love and bought the lotion and body wash. I love the way it feels and it fixes my dry skin. Added bonus: I get compliments on the smell all the time and it lasts all day!" —Alindsey14

"I could go on and on about how much I love this, but here are some key points: smells like heaven (I've gotten so many compliments on the way I smell since I've been using this), applies nicely, dries quick, doesn't leave residue or any heavy feeling — leaves skin super soft and smooth and tight. Very, very slight shimmer. Packaging is cute and practical (dropped a few times and hasn't broken)." —kirashai

"This product smells delicious, and has a beautiful shimmer to it. I got this product because of stretch marks, and I have seen some improvement. I would definitely recommend. This product makes my skin so soft!" —listan

For someone who doesn’t wear mascara and is often without a manicure, I envy anyone able to exude a markedly put-together appearance.

After years of experimenting I’ve finally embraced my own brand of femininity — one of the fresh-faced, simplistic variety — but there is something to be said for feeling like the sexiest version of yourself. And if that results from a slight upgrade to one product in my beauty routine, so be it.

You may be wondering what it is about this particular lotion that makes me feel like my best self.

It’s true it is glittery, and not in that roll-on body-glitter look reminiscent of the early aughts. This stuff looks C-L-A-S-S-Y. Once sufficiently slathered, my arms and legs shimmer, ever so delicately, in the sunlight. It’s subtle and perfect and there’s no other way to describe it.

    Secondly, the scent is heavenly.

It smells like a vanilla bean and a coconut reproduced and then evolved to complement my unique body chemistry. It’s an understated version of a tropical paradise, and the rumors are true: It lasts all day.

I guess that the lotion is actually marketed for firming skin and minimizing cellulite with the active ingredient guaraná extract, which is packed with caffeine. Truth be told, I haven’t noticed anything to verify that claim, but I haven’t studied my bum bum enough to confidently confirm or deny it (I’m assuming it would be quite a subtle change).

At the end of the day, I think the lotion has enough positives to be worth the price tag, even without the added bonus of a firmer behind. And if my tush does firm up a bit, sure, I can get behind that too.

Get it from Amazon or Sephora for $45.
