small pink book called "What I love about you by me"
    Amazon

The book has 112 pages and comes with a plastic sleeve for safe-keeping. Prompts such as "You deserve the ______ award," and "You have the greatest taste in ______," guide you towards some sweet sentiments. May I suggest, "You have the greatest taste in partners."

Promising review: "For Christmas, I wanted something personal for my boyfriend. Sometimes I feel like there isn't enough time to show your appreciation for the one you love. After doing some researching, I decided on this fill-in-the-blank book. Some of the questions were a bit goofy and a laugh for us both, but I loved being able to fill out and answer the questions. It was a gift that he definitely will remember and it made my day to see how much he appreciated hearing all the things I love about him!" β€”Jenna G

Southern Elegance Candle Co. is a Black woman-owned brand that's focused on community β€” all of their supplies are sourced from North Carolina, where they're based.

My colleague Kayla Boyd has this candle and loves it! In her words: "This candle was actually a gift from a friend, but I had to share because it's so lovely. The company is Black woman-owned and the soy candles are hand-poured. The Charleston Sweet Tea scent reminds me of a summer trip I took to Charleston a few years ago with the friend who gifted it. It smells like berries, flowers, and apples."

Get it from Southern Elegance Candle Co for $20.

    3. And an electric candle lighter to make lighting that favorite scented candle an ever greater joy. Zapping a wick > struggling with matches.

    Heather Braga / BuzzFeed

My colleague Heather Braga has this lighter and loves it! In her words: "I'm obsessed with candles, so it was a no-brainer for my husband to gift me this surprisingly super fun gadget for Christmas. It's really simple to use and charge, and it really works! If you're someone who gets a thrill from RAW POWER this is sort of the product for you. No, it's not a super intense gadget, relax pyromaniacs, but it does buzz and produce a burst of electricity that I personally find exciting. AND I'll never have to buy another lighter again! Stop burning your fingers on matches and pick up one of these bad boys."

Get it from Amazon for $15.99.

    4. A stainless-steel French press covered in dog illustrations, because dog pictures are pretty much the only thing that could possibly improve their coffee experience.

The French press also comes with a measuring spoon.

Promising review: "I purchased this French press because of the beautiful print that included a Standard Poodle. I was pleasantly surprised that not only is it beautifully designed but it is the best French press I’ve owned. It keeps my coffee nice and hot and no coffee grounds in my cup. I would definitely purchase again. Love this French press!" β€”Kristal K

The kombucha kit includes a 1-gallon brewing jar featuring a place to write brew notes, pH test strips, a temperature gauge, a 16-page post-brewing guide, organic sugar, an organic tea blend, and a kombucha culture and liquid starter.

Promising review: "It has everything you need to start a first batch of kombucha. It includes clear instructions on how to make it and continue your kombucha for the second batch. Now I’m making my third batch and loving it so far. After the first batch, you will need to find your own tea leaves and sugar but it’s fun trying different tea to see how differently it tastes. It’s also fun trying different fruits/spices for second fermentation. If you purchase this kit as your first kombucha investment, you can brew your kombucha forever only with additional tea leaves and sugar." β€”Meg

    10. A large leather Madewell transport tote that's come to be one of the brand's signature items and is sure to become one of your beloved's most-used bags. I got this as a gift six years ago and have cherished it since that day!

    Rachel Dunkel / BuzzFeed

Random canvas totes may come and go, but nothing beats having a permanent, go-to bag. I've had this since college when I used it to carry my heavy load of books, my laptop, and other English major paraphernalia, but it's transitioned flawlessly into my adult life where β€” OK β€” I still use it to carry books and my computer. The leather is getting a lovely patina and the structure of the bag is as strong as the day I got it. It has one zippered interior pocket which is perfect for keys, cards, or any other tiny necessities. I received this as a gift, so I can confirm that it makes a good one! My bag is even monogrammed, which made the gift all the more special. (You can add monogramming to almost any Madewell leather or denim item for $10 or for free if you're a Madewell Insider!) If you can't spring for this wondrous tote now, I absolutely recommend putting it on your wishlist.

Get it from Madewell for $168 (available in four colors)

    11. A subscription to Book of the Month so they always have a bestseller on their bedside table to dig into at the end of a long day. I'm a subscriber and I've also given it as a gift to much acclaim if I do say so myself.

five of book of the month's book choices
    instagram.com

I adore my Book of the Month subscription! It keeps me sharp, researching titles and always looking forward to a new read. It also makes an incredible gift! I've actually given BOTM to my mom a few times and it's really fun to be members at the same time so we can read the same books, exchange them after we finish, and talk about what we're going to get each month! Every month you get your choice of one of five titles with an option to skip a month and save your credit for whenever you please. Especially as quarantine wares on, I'm especially thankful to have good books arriving all the time to keep me occupied.

Get it from Book of the Month for $14.99+/month.

    12. A Hydroflask travel coffee mug, because their pickiness about beverage temperature is one of the things you love most about them.

    Amazon

I have this mug and it fully rocks. Just like the reliable Hydroflask water bottles keep things cold for what feels like eternity, likewise this keeps liquid nice and hot for hours. The strap on the lid is shockingly handy. It's perfect for walking to the car or subway β€” no more squishing a mug in your elbow crease while you struggle with your keys hoping you don't drop either! The lid is sturdy and fairly leakproof, but even so I wouldn't throw it into a bag to just let it jumble around. BUT I feel like that about 99% of travel mugs. I have too many travel mugs and this is one of my very favorites β€” worth the extra $$, especially as a gift. It's BPA-free and dishwasher-safe.

Promising review: "This is my best coffee friend. I had no idea how lacking I was until I purchased it. I can get busy and forget I have coffee (I know, blasphemy!) but this thing keeps it warm FOR HOURS! No joke, HOURS! I will buy another one for the person I love in this world, because they deserve this type of coffee happiness! And so do you! Buy it β€” you are welcome." β€”Ari Walker

Get it from Amazon for $29.95+ (available in three sizes and 11 colors).

    13. An electric wine bottle opener so they can keep popping bottles without fear of getting cork in the wine...a tragedy.

    Amazon

The bottle opener comes with a foil cutter, can remove a cork in seconds, and works on 30 bottles on a single charge! It also comes with a sleek charging station that will fit in on any home bar.

Promising review: "Picture the scene: It's Saturday afternoon, you have discovered a fresh bottle of wine in the fridge and you have absolutely no responsibilities for the day. You go to the drawer to get your corkscrew and your osteoarthritis says, 'OH HOLD UP! GO GET YO MAN TO OPEN THIS FOR YOU!' ...except your man is at a friend's house helping install a ceiling fan. The horror. The devastation. But wait! Enter the Oster electric wine opener. All my dreams came true. Simple and sleek design takes up little counter space. It works flawlessly and with ease. Be still, my wine-soaked heart. True love does exist." β€”Allison S.

model in bed leaning against the foam pillow
    Amazon

Get it from Amazon for $43.50+ (available in two sizes).

reviewer wearing four stacked engraved rings
    amazon.com

The stackable rings are made of stainless steel and can have up to 35 characters of customization. They're from Amazon Handmade and can take one or two days to create and ship.

Promising review: "I have three daughters and I got each of their names engraved on a ring. I got one silver, one gold, and one rose gold. They are just beautiful, sturdy, and look like they must have cost a lot more than they did. My in-laws thought we went to a jewelry store and had them done." β€”sozohappy

Get it from Amazon for $14.95 (available in five colors and sizes 3–11.5).

Get it from Amazon for $93.99.

    19. A pair of slippers, because up until now you have been the Official Foot Warmer of the house. Obviously, you've been happy to help those tootsies, but it's time to pass the title on to these cozy essentials.

reviewer's feet in tweed and shearling slippers with open backs
    amazon.com

Promising review: "I LOVE these slippers. SO comfortable and warm with the memory foam. Love the thick rubber sole on the bottom, so there is no way you would slip. I bought these to bring the hospital when I give birth, but I am wearing these all the time." β€”emily

    amazon.com, amazon.com

    Don't forget the AA batteries!

Promising review: "This has revolutionized my coffee routine and allows me to make lattes like they do at Starbucks at home. I have used it exclusively with plant-based milks (coconut, almond, etc.) and it perfectly froths nondairy milks. I can't tell you how much money I have saved not having to go to the coffee shop every time I want to have a delicious latte. It makes a beautiful, delicate foam that holds up for the whole cup of coffee. I love that there's still foam even in the last sip. Also, you can use this for the fancy cold foam to have with iced coffee drinks. I love this device so much! I have recommended it to literally everyone I know and plan on purchasing another frother in the near future just so I can keep one at the office to make sure I never have to make coffee without it. I couldn't go back to just coffee and cream after having tried the perfect lattes made by this." β€”Lindsey Catherine

Get it from Amazon for $16.95 (available in 13 colors).

    22. And pumpkin pie sauce so those drinks can always be a pumpkin spice latte β€” their favorite β€” no matter the season.

bottle of torani pumpkin pie sauce
    Amazon

Promising review: "One of my favorite things about fall is getting pumpkin spice coffees from the coffee shops. When I saw these on Amazon I was excited that I could have my pumpkin spice drink all year long. glass bowls with silicone wraps in different colors and sizes on a shelf
    Amazon

The jars are BPA-free, as well as microwave- and dishwasher-safe.

Before working from home became the norm, I would use these handy jars to bring my lunch almost every day. They're perfect for things like fruit, salad, or something saucy β€” stuff you really don't want to get squished *and* want to ensure doesn't leak into your bag. *But* I have found that I use them just as much at home full-time! They are of course great for leftovers, but also for prepped ingredients for the week. Shedded cheese, prepped chicken, and chopped veggies usually live in these, ready to be utilized for a quick lunch or snack. They clean *super* well β€” I even have the cream color and it recovered from storing beets! 10/10 from me.

Get them from Amazon for $24.40+ (available in two sizes and five colors).

    25. A set of artificial succulents with vases so they can benefit from the beauty of having plant bbs without the grueling work of having to water them a little bit once a month.

four different fake succulents in clear sphere planters

Get a set of four on Amazon for $24.99.

puzzle of a new york times front page
    UncommonGoods

Get it from UncommonGoods for $49.95.

    27. Some loose leaf tea from Brooklyn Tea that'll make their nights spent at home feel a little cozier. I particularly recommend their Vanilla Rooibos and Darjeeling teas. If my partner is out there reading this, yes, I would like you to repurchase these as a gift, please!

the writer's two bags of loose leaf tea on a wooden tray with a mug and small saucer of looseleaf darjeeling
    Rachel Dunkel / BuzzFeed

Brooklyn Tea is Black-owned and based in β€” you guessed it! β€” Brooklyn, New York. I love their tea because it's very high quality *and* they give you super precise brewing instructions on the back of the packaging. So helpful! Due to high demand, orders will take three to four weeks, but it's worth it! And hey, it's something to look forward to.

Get them from Brooklyn Tea: the Vanilla Rooibos for $5.99+ (available in six sizes) and the Darjeeling for $6.99+ (available in six sizes).

    28. A stainless-steel pocket tool, because no task is too big for this little instrument. It's basically 11 gifts in one!

silver multitool tucked into a wallet
    Amazon

The multi-tool includes a can opener, bottle opener, four-position wrench, two-position wrench, butterfly screw wrench, direction ancillary wrench, knife edge, saw blade, screwdriver, ruler, and keychain hole.

Promising review: "I rarely use tools, but on the rare occasion that I need one, I groan thinking that I need to go buy the respective tool which, again, I'll rarely use anyway. This multi-use pocket tool is just what a gal like me needs! The best thing about it is that unlike other multi-tools, it is flat and fits in your wallet! They also provide a carrying case so you can store it in your bag. They advertise a keyring hole, which is the one thing I would advise against, because the knife edge and saw blade are sharp and I wouldn't want this tool hanging around my body. But on the bright side, with the stainless steel material, the tools are actually sharp β€” a pleasant surprise. This won't break with average use." β€”Johann Christine Alcaraz

Get it from Amazon for $7.13.

    29. A mushroom growing kit that puts the ~fun~ in fungus and lets you cultivate your very own pink oyster mushrooms! A perfect gift for any mushroom lover. (The food kind, not the other kind.)

reviewer's home grown pink oyster mushrooms
    amazon.com

The kit comes with an all-in-one already colonized block as well as a spray bottle for keeping your bb mushrooms nice and hydrated.

Promising review: "This kit worked extremely well! My family and I were shocked at how full and quickly the mushrooms grew. They're delicious as well. The directions that come with the kit are very simple and clear but I HIGHLY recommend watching the short video online. These would be great for the classroom because of the ease of growth and ability to see the whole mushroom (mycelium). Can't wait to try the brown oysters next!" β€”J. Dochtermann

Get it from Amazon for $30.49.

    30. A pair of over-ear headphones to replace all those earbuds they've lost this year alone! These have great sound quality, won't make your ears ache, and are decidedly difficult to misplace.

model in corded lime green over-ear headphones
    Amazon

Promising review: "Wow! I've owned a lot of headsets far more expensive over the years yet this product can hold its own against any of them. The sound quality exceeds my expectations and the fit is very comfortable. Shipping was fast as well." β€”me

Get it from Amazon for $16.09 (available in three colors).

    32. Some iconic Sticker Sheets from Stylish Sista on Etsy for decorating every surface in sight. Their laptop, phone, computer, YOU!

a lizzo sticker sheet and a nicki minaj sticker sheet

    33. A Squatty Potty, because the ultimate sign of true love is knowing each others' poop schedules. And trust me, once they try a Squatty Potty, they'll never look back.

    Amazon

Promising review: "I bought this about a month ago for my wife and me, and really wanted to get some good time in with it before I wrote this review. We are pretty healthy people, work out when possible, and have no problems when it comes to #2. That said, this is by far the best bathroom accessory you can buy. I like to poop. It's literally the first thing I do in the morning. This will make it that more enjoyable. Sit down, pull it out from the toilet, put your feet up, and bombs away! It feels like a straight pipe coming from your colon. Remember those difficult-to-push-out BMs? No more! With just a slight push, you are done. Gravity takes over, and out she comes. This is how the human body was designed to poop. We literally pooped like this for thousands of years! I recommend this to all my friends, who laugh at me till they try it. Stop making it hard on yourself when you poop. Buy a Squatty Potty!" β€”jjl1911

Get it from Amazon for $24.99 in classic white or $75.95 in a modern, clear version.

Learn more about the Squatty Potty in "I Tried The Squatty Potty And I Will Never Poop The Same."

    34. A short or long puffer coat from Universal Standard, because chances are it's been a while since they treated themselves to a splurge-worthy winter staple.

    Universal Standard

I got short version of this coat in the color "Caramel" this season and it's quickly becoming one of my faves. My only other puffer I'd had since 2012, and it's already so nice to be able to choose which one I'd like to throw on seeing as it's already getting pretty cold where I live in Michigan. The collar zips up super high so you can protect your face from the cold (a feature I really value since ideally I just like my eyeballs to peak out from my winter gear and nothing else) and it has a removable hood that's also so puffy and warm. The thing about the jacket I'm most impressed with though is the hardware. It's shiny buttons and zipper feel so strong and long-lasting, but also look really luxurious. I know I'll be wearing this coat for years and years.

Get it from Universal Standard: the short version for $228 (available in sizes 00–40 and four colors) and the long version for $285 (available in sizes 00–40 and four colors).

    35. An external battery for always keeping in touch, especially if your partner tends to go rogue when it comes to phone charging!

black rectangular external battery being pulled out of a purse
    Amazon

My partner got this for me, and I truly use it all the time. It holds three FULL charges for an iPhone and is an essential, especially considering I'm lost 100% of the time. I've now had it for two years, which is honestly longer than I expect any little gadget under $50 to last, especially considering how hard I can be on tech.

Promising review: "Got this as a gift for my wife before we went overseas for two weeks. She was able to charge her phone during the day for four or five days before it needed to be recharged. I was actually very impressed with it." β€”Ray Detwiler

Get it from Amazon for $16.99+ (available in four colors).

    36. A super handy apron that features built-in potholders, a conversion chart, three large pockets, and an adjustable neck strap. It's basically the Cadillac of aprons, and with all the cooking they've been doing lately, they'll certainly get great use out of it.

    Food52

I own and love this apron. The canvas material is sturdy, but not uncomfortably thick, and the built-in pot holders are wildly useful when it comes to grabbing hot metal pot lids. I have a weirdly large amount of aprons, but this is the one I reach for when things are really splattering. And seeing as it's my "the spaghetti sauce got too bubbly" apron, I've washed it in the washing machine and can report it has held up very well.

Promising review: "I have many aprons I don't use. I had to try this one β€” it's perfect! Love the features and the fit. The adjustable neck strap convinced me to order, as knots in most neck straps give me neck pain I can't ignore. Love this apron!" β€”Blueberry

Get it from Food52 for $45 (available in six colors)

    37. A three-piece ceramic planter with excellent drainage to keep their indoor plants happy and healthy as well as serve as an adorable piece of decor. You'll never have to hear them lament, "WHY do the cutest planters not have drainage?!" again, although you've always been happy to let them vent.

Promising review: "I was honestly shocked at the high quality of this planter. It is absolutely gorgeous. The cream-speckled color is rich and beautiful and not at all boring. I love how the style is simple and funky at the same time, and of course love that drainage! I will definitely be getting more of the Kaya planters in the future." β€”Kristen

Get it from Jungalow for $68 (available in blue and cream speckles, but check back to see if more colors are restocked soon).

    38. What Do You Meme? a card game that will make all that back and forth meme-sending between the two of you finally pay off.

photo of a randy jackson and two meme card options for gameplay
    instagram.com

During gameplay, you put a picture of a meme on a literal pedestal, and everyone has to play the descriptor card that makes the best match with the image. Def not for kids and recommended for ages 17+.

Promising review: "This is such a FUN game! And it makes a unique gift that works for everyone. If you have someone in your life that is difficult to buy for β€” meaning they pretty much have everything they need or just buy it for themselves if they want something β€” this is the PERFECT gift! As a hostess gift, housewarming gift, birthday, or holiday gift. Great for college kids, parents, and neighbors. Works for both close friends/family and the new people in your life that you aren't sure about what to give as a gift. Our typical go-to gift was a nice bottle of liquor. Now it's this game!" β€”Mel S

    39. A French butter crock so they aways have fresh, softened butter on-hand and gorgeous piece of pottery to casually display. True love is wishing for your partner never having to spread too-cold butter on too-soft bread, ultimately ripping it, ever again.

I'd go so far as to say I'm a butter fangirl, so of course I want nothing but the best for my favorite dairy. Knowing this about me, my partner gifted me this crock and my life is forever improved. This butter crock isn't just gorgeous, it keeps butter unbelievably fresh at room temperature. Now I'm guaranteed to always have some softened butter around. Just put a stick of butter in the top portion, a little water in the bottom portion and put them together to make a perfect seal. This baby also just looks fantastic on my countertop. Love a functional piece of art!

Get it from CPClayArt on Etsy for $33 (available in three colors).

    40. A jar opener for all the times they need a little extra elbow grease...even though they totally loosened it on their own. This is the gift that will make them say "where has this been all my life?"

    Amazon

The jar-opener can expand and contract to accommodate lids from 1 to 3.5 inches. It's also dishwasher-safe, just in case.

Promising review: "This is a very versatile jar opener that, unlike so many others, expands with a twist of the knob to accommodate larger jar lids. Once applied and tightened, the handle provides great leverage to open even the most stubborn of jars. I tried to open a wide-mouthed pickle jar by hand and no success after many tries which included running the lid under hot water and knocking it against a granite countertop. Opening the jar had to wait until this handy unit arrived. Once again, I tried to open the jar by hand without success. Then I applied the Kuhn Rikon to the pickle jar, tightened it against the edges of the lid, grabbed the handle and then......voila! It opened with one nudge." β€”Steven Arnold

Get it from Amazon for $20.45+ (available in three colors).

    41. And, of course, a Dwight sequin pillow emoting what I'm gonna go ahead and call "the current mood" that you will both cherish until the end of time, and is basically your son now.

Promising review: "This made an awesome present for an Office fan. It's been placed on a high traffic pillow and none of the sequins have come off! The value for the quality received is excellent. It made such a great present that I am considering buying a few more for Christmas." β€”Finding Joy
