What I should have said is they "can" use a JATO. In the most famous small airport landing, the Don Scott incident, the 707 used a variation of a JATO to get it off a 4400 foot runway.
This has actually happened quite a few times before. Usually what they do is strip out all the weight they can (including things like seats) and attach a rocket pack (called a JATO) both of which can drastically reduce the amount of runway needed.
