"When it comes to getting stoned ... I was a complete failure," said one PM. Can you guess who?

In 2010 Abbott spoke about his unsuccessful attempt at getting stoned.

"To be sociable I puffed on a marijuana cigarette, but I didn't inhale. I don't even inhale normal cigarettes. I just hate the idea of drawing smoke into my lungs, so when it comes to getting stoned in that way I was a complete failure."

In 1992, when opposition leader John Hewson asked why prime minister Paul Keating wouldn't call an election, this was Keating's brutal response.

"Mate, because I want to do you slowly. There has to be a bit of sport in this for all of us."

Menzies said this as part of his famous "forgotten people" speech in 1942.

"If we are to talk of classes, then the time has come to say something of the forgotten class — the middle class."

Howard made this promise at his 2001 election launch.

John Howard

"We will decide who comes to this country and the circumstances in which they come."

Whitlam said these immortal words on the steps of Parliament House on Nov. 11, 1975.

Gough Whitlam

"Ladies and gentlemen, well may we say 'God save the Queen', because nothing will save the governor-general."

Hawke made this statement in 1983 on the morning Australia won the America's Cup sailing match races. It went down well.

"Any boss who sacks anyone for not turning up today is a bum."

Whitlam spoke these words half a century ago, three years before becoming PM.

"Poverty is a national waste as well as individual waste. We are all diminished when any of us are denied proper education."

After toppling sitting PM Kevin Rudd in 2010, Gillard said this by way of explanation.

"I asked my colleagues to make a leadership change ... because I believed that a good government was losing its way."

Abbott said this in 2010 in an attempt to whip up a bit of fear about power prices.

"What the housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing is that if they get it done commercially it's going to go up in price and their own power bills when they switch the iron on are going to go up."

The former PM made these comments about Tony Abbott in 2015.

Malcolm Fraser

"The prime minister has got his back to the wall. He's just survived a near rebellion from his own party and he has demonstrated since then that he has not changed, he has not learnt, he has behaved in the same bully-boy fashion..."

This 2010 promise didn't go so well for PM Gillard.

"If elected as prime minister I will re-prosecute the case for a carbon price at home and abroad."

Chifley's "light on the hill" speech was made in 1949.

"We have a great objective – the light on the hill – which we aim to reach by working for the betterment of mankind not only here but anywhere we may give a helping hand."

Keating was never allowed to forget this statement, made in 1990.

"The most important thing about that is that this is a recession that Australia had to have."

Gorton spoke in favour of the Vietnam War in 1969.

John Gorton

"We believe that we were right to help the people of South Vietnam resist aggression. And we believe we are right to continue to do so."

Hughes embraced the motherland in these 1917 comments.

"We believe in the British Empire because it stands for liberty; because it has given us all that we have; because it has protected us all our lives; because it now protects us; because we know that without its protection ... we should long ago have become a German colony."

Paul Keating aiming his barrels at PM John Howard in 2007.

"The little desiccated coconut's under pressure and he's attacking anything he can get his hands on."

In a video uploaded to YouTube in 2012, Mr Rudd lost his shit while trying to record a message in Mandarin.

"You can tell these dickheads in the embassy to just give me simple sentences ... Tell that bloody interpreter. This fucking language just complicates it so much, you know."  


Morrison channelled Forrest Gump in 2018 ahead of the Wentworth by-election.

“With the Liberal Party, you know what you are going to get. With the Labor Party, you never know what you are going to get.”

In the 2014 election campaign Abbott was asked to compare the new Liberal candidate for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, with former MP Jackie Kelly.

"They're young, feisty, I think I can probably say have a bit of sex appeal and they're just very connected with the local area."

Politics? Meh.

I know what I need to know.
