  1. Spider-Man

    Sony
    Click to reveal.
    Correct!
    Wrong!

Up until recently, Peter Parker had his body and mind taken over by Otto “Dr. Octopus” Octavius in a complicated “Freaky Friday” type scenario that left Peter to “die” in Otto’s frail and damaged body. Octavius tried to make the most of circumstances by becoming a better Spider-Man than Peter ever was. This story ran its course, and Peter Parker is back to normal as Spider-Man, though he’s now living a life that Octavius actually improved in many ways. (Like, for example, Peter is now the CEO of a company called Parker Industries.) Where to start: The Superior Spider-Man Vol. 1: My Own Worst Enemy for the beginning of the Otto Octavius storyline, and The Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1: The Parker Luck for the return of Peter Parker.

    Wrong!

It’s kinda complicated to explain how this happened, but Tony Stark’s mind has been compromised and as a result, he’s reverted to being a smug, ruthless capitalist creep. His first move as the Superior Iron Man will be to unleash Exremis 3.0 on the city of San Francisco in a bid to create a “perfect” technological utopia on earth. Stark is also the leader of a secret group of Avengers known as The Illuminati, and has been forced to do horrible things in order to prevent the destruction of the multiverse. After a big confrontation with the Avengers, he’s basically out of the picture now. His son, Nick Fury Jr., has taken his place in S.H.I.E.L.D. An evil young man from the future who looks just like Xavier and has the same powers was revealed to be his son with Mystique. When the X-Men had to come together for the reading of his will, it was revealed that Xavier was in fact married to Mystique, and that he had essentially lobotomized an immensely powerful mutant named Matthew Malloy and kept him a secret from the X-Men. He served as the headmaster of the school with Storm – with whom he’d started a romantic relationship in the recent past – and the de facto leader of the faction of X-Men at the school. He lost his healing factor in a very complicated storyline, and died heroically at the end of the recent Death of Wolverine miniseries. We’ll almost certainly never ever see him again. Also, his powers were “broken” after being possessed by the Phoenix, so he’s slowly learning how to control them again. Where to start: Avengers Vs. Wrong!

In the wake of Charles Xavier’s death, Henry McCoy is furious with Xavier’s killer, his once close friend Cyclops. A distraught McCoy decides to bring the original five X-Men – including teen versions of himself and Cyclops – to the present in an attempt to freak Cyclops out. This backfires horribly when the original X-Men end up stuck in the present, setting in motion a series of catastrophic problems and irreversibly messing up the space/time continuum. The main theme with Beast these days is that while he presents himself as a moral authority, he is constantly making morally questionable and scientifically irresponsible decisions. He’s also a member of the secret group of Avengers known as the Illuminati, who have done some terrible things in order to prevent the destruction of Earth. After an adventure in space, she’s involved in a long distance relationship with Peter “Star-Lord” Quill of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Where to start: All New X-Men Vol. 1: Yesterday's X-Men

She is the de facto leader of the time displaced original X-Men after the young Cyclops went off into space with his space pirate father, who he had never met as a child. (It’s complicated.)
