    Modern Feminists: Kim Kardashian

How Kim Kardashian created the empire around her, meanwhile broadening what it means to a woman in the 21st century.

People don't understand when Kim Kardashian gets any respect. They always say, "Why should the that whore with the sex tape get (enter here one of her accomplishments)?" When in fact, Kim Kardashian deserves everything she has ever amounted to. Sorry, but if you look at what has happened to her, and how she has responded, she is doing more for women than most would think.

Let's go back to an interesting time in popular culture: 2007. Everyone in Hollywood had a DUI and weighed 90 pounds (not that anything is wrong with that, if you are healthy of course). Paris Hilton was totally pissed at her old friends Nicole Richie & Lindsay Lohan, and she had a new sidekick. Her name was Kim Kardashian, a 5"2' Armenian girl from Beverly Hills, with huge tits and an even bigger ass. At the time this wasn't the norm for Hollywood, so people were intrigued by this girl. Who is the short, curvaceous, beautiful Armenian girl Paris Hilton is hanging out with? Soon she was seen in all of Paris' pap shots, linked to different celebrities (Nick Cannon, Nick Lachey for example), and was the definition of a D-List celebrity.

As the silly media attention grew, people wanted to know more about her. Knowing the success of Paris Hilton's sex tape, someone sold a tape of Kim to the company based around celebrity sex tapes, Vivid Entertainment. Word got around the blogosphere that Kim Kardashian had a sex tape, and she tried to stop it. She sued Vivid entertainment, stating "This tape, which was made three years ago, and was meant to be something private between myself and my then-boyfriend is extremely hurtful not only to me, but to my family as well. I am filing legal charges against the company who is distributing this tape since it is being sold completely without my permission or consent." Alas, she could file charges, but there is nothing she could do to get that tape off the market. Partly, because Vivid Entertainment knew how big it would be, but more importantly because she was an active participant in making the tape (at the young age of 22, with her boyfriend of 3 years).

So, Kim could do a couple of things. She could continue taking legal action against the company, which would only waste time and money and amount to nothing. Or she could settle, take a certain amount of money from the company and profits from the video. She chose the settlement, as any logical person would. Now again, she has two choices, as Dr. Gail Dines stated when talking about Paris Hilton's tape (basically the same situation as Kim's): "as most women who are traumatized, there was two choices: You either run and hide and never, ever come out again, or you decide, in a kind of pathological way, to embrace that trauma and "own" it as your own. So what she said is, "If you're going to call me a slut, then guess what? I'm going to be the best fucking slut you've ever met in your life." Which is, by the way, a traumatic response to conditions that are out of your control."

Kim Kardashian did just that, and more. Since she decided not to hide, she got a TV show and did what she could with the public's tiny D-List fascination with her. Her show, (which isn't even hers it's based around her family perhaps you've heard of it?), started in 2007, and by 2009 herself and her family were household names and worldwide phenomenons. They created high fashion clothing stores around the US, perfumes, continued to stretched themselves to every avenue that worked for them (QVC, makeup brands, anything with a mass market), and entertained the millions of viewers their show has every week. By now, 2014 that is, her family has created a place for themselves as icons in our popular culture. Like I said in the beginning of this article— this upsets people. You could easy say this upsets people, because they are jealous, but that is too easy. Some may be, but the real reason we hate her is because she was the slut who should have been shamed to the edges of society. However, everyone came to find out she was in fact a business woman as well, had a great family, and as of now a fiancee and a beautiful child. Our culture has taught us to slut-shame a dehumanize any girl who openly expresses her sexual freedom (What slut-shaming is and why it's WRONG). The girls with the nudies should switch to different schools, where no one knows her. The celebrities whose nudies get exposed by rude ex boyfriends, must apologize for their actions when they had been deceived. Megan Fox (another woman not taken seriously because of her looks/sexuality, when in fact if you research her she's incredibly intelligent and fascinating) said it perfectly in her GQ article about this problem: 'Sex is something that everyone does, so why can't I talk about it? With any of the Miley Cyrus shit, or any of that Vanessa Hudgens shit—I would never issue an apology for my life and for who I am. It's like, Oh, I'm sorry I took a naked, private picture that someone is an asshole and sold for money. I'm sorry if someone else is a dick. No. You shouldn't have to apologize. Someone betrayed Vanessa, but no one's angry at that person. She had to apologize. I hate Disney for making her do that. Fuck Disney. Yeah, fuck Disney. They take these little girls, and they put them through entertainment school and teach them to sing and dance, and make them wear belly shirts, but they won't allow them to be their own people. It makes me sick."

Kim Kardashian shows us that the women will not be confined to the restraints society puts on them. She has disproved every theory that all the sluts aren't stupid, and that the amount of sexual partners a woman has had isn't relative to anything about her character or intelligence. In all honesty, her sexual past isn't anyones business. No, not even if she has a sex tape that was sold to the public by some asshole.

And if you really look at Kim Kardashian, and you watch the show, you'll realize that she's a pretty sweet quiet girl. Herself and the comradery the family has with eachother is thoroughly entertaining. I don't watch Keeping Up With the Kardashian's, because Kim had a sextape. I watch the show, because I laugh my ass off. And if you don't watch the Kardashians just because you don't find it entertaining, that's fine. I'm not telling anyone to like the Kardashians. I'm asking you to base your judgements off Kim, as well as all women, based on her character rather then her sexual past in efforts to stop slut shaming. Do not hate Kim Kardashian, because she likes to express her sexual freedom as a woman, hate her because she wears fur.
