George Michael's Funeral Has Taken Place In A "Small, Private Ceremony"

    A spokesperson for the star said: "George Michael's family would like to thank his fans across the world for their many messages of love and support."

    More than three months after his death, George Michael was finally given a private funeral on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the star has confirmed.

    Following Michael's sudden death on Christmas Day, 2016, weeks of tests ensued to establish the cause of death.

    After weeks of speculation, Darren Salter, the senior coroner for Oxfordshire, confirmed that the star's death was due to complications arising from heart disease and there would be no further inquiries.

    In a brief statement sent out to BuzzFeed News this afternoon, Michael's publicist said: "We can confirm that the funeral of of the singer George Michael took place today. Family and close friends gathered for the small, private ceremony to say goodbye to their beloved Son, Brother and Friend."

    The statement continued: "George Michael's family would like to thank his fans across the world for their many messages of love and support. We ask that the family's wish for privacy be respected so that they can continue to live their lives privately, away from any media intrusion. No further details will be released."

    The British pop music icon, whose career began in the early 1980s, died at his home in Oxfordshire at the age of 53.
