Star Wars: The Force Awakens has broken the record for opening-day cinema ticket sales in the UK, thanks to midnight screenings.
The film's producer, Disney, said the seventh entry in the Star Wars saga made £9.6 million in the UK in 24 hours, making Thursday "the biggest single day in UK industry history".
Midnight screenings alone accounted for £2.4 million in ticket sales. Disney said that at least 2 million tickets were booked in advance when they went on sale in October, which it claims is also a record.
Variety quoted industry sources who predicted that globally the film would beat Jurassic World's opening weekend takings of £524.9 million (£352 million).
Disney spent more than $4 billion to buy LucasFilm and the rights to the Star Wars franchise.
