It's 2019, So Why Did This Costume Designer Have To Make A Lead Character's Plus-Size Outfits From Scratch?

"Once you get to a certain size, people sort of want you to disappear."

So Shrill finally dropped on Hulu last Friday and people are already OBSESSED with the very hilarious and very real comedy series.

The show centers on Annie (played by SNL's Aidy Bryant), a young woman who's trying to launch her journalism career while navigating bad boyfriends, a sick parent, and a perfectionist boss.

But in a recent interview, Shrill costume designer Amanda Needham revealed that finding the right looks for the show was super challenging. “Once you get to a certain size, people sort of want you to disappear,” Amanda told Vulture.

According to Amanda, clothing options were extremely limited, so most of Annie's outfits had to be made from scratch, including a fabulous sequin dress the character wears to an important work event.

The essential "Fat Babe Pool Party" scene also required some hardcore resourcefulness. "We really scoured, begged, and made so pieces," Amanda shared. "It was such a beautiful scene to see these women feel seen and heard in ways that they didn't. There was really options for them."

A few brands did come through in the clutch, though, like Rihanna's cult fave lingerie line Savage X Fenty. “It was really amazing to see bras and underwear in that size that weren’t just ugly,” Amanda said. “Once you get to a certain size, the options become pretty dismal."

Aidy's previously spoken out about styling challenges she's experienced at past photoshoots. "Those were the first times where I was like, 'Something is different here and this isn’t fair,'" she told The Cut last year. "This is a fucked-up situation, and it’s purely because of my body."

To combat her lack of options in the fashion world, the actress works with former SNL stylist Remy Pearce to make most of her clothing. And being the boss that she is, Aidy has plans to expand those designs into her very own clothing line!

PROPS ARE IN ORDER FOR AMANDA AND AIDY FOR BREAKING BARRIERS IN FASHION, TV, AND BEYONDDD!!!
