Attack of the Smartasses
This article tells the story of "Fakesters," fictitious profiles that made the the first big social-networking friend site, "Friendster," quite entertaining. In 2003, Friendster began cracking down on "Fakesters." Soon after, a little known site called Myspace stole its thunder. In 2006, Myspace added captchas in order to reduce band spam. Shortly after, a little known site called Facebook stole its thunder. In recent weeks, Facebook has added captchas for posting, and it has begun to disallow the creation of fictitious profiles. See a pattern? (via America's Best Blogger).
