A regent is someone who takes over responsibilities if the monarch is unable to, whether due to illness or the monarch being a child. Prince George (later King George IV) was regent for his Father, George III.

The Regency era lasted from 1811–1820 while Prince George ruled on behalf of his father, but some refer to a longer Regency era from 1795–1837.
