    1. Regularly use hair masks like the cult fave Olaplex Hair Perfector No. 3 and the more affordable Elizavecca CER-100 collagen treatment to do everything from reducing breakage and split ends to repairing strands with all the vitamins and oils your hair has been missing. You'll stop seeing your precious strands go down the shower drain!

    Bek O'Connell / BuzzFeed, Bek O' Connell / BuzzFeed

We've tried both of these too and and they really work! Check out our Elizavecca CER-100 collagen treatment and our Olaplex No. 3 review.

Promising review (for Olaplex): "Works wonders on my hair. My hair has been very dry and damaged from too much straightening and curling from hot tools and my ends were starting to look terrible. To be honest, I have thin hair, do not get haircuts often, and I blow-dry and straighten or curl my hair almost every single day so my hair goes through a lot on a daily basis. I used it for the first time a few days ago and my hair looked much healthier. My hair was silky and soft with less visible damage and that was only after one use. I am very positive it will only get better the more I use it and the longer I keep in on my hair if it worked well after only one 15-minute use." —Gina

Get them from Amazon: Olaplex for $28 and Elizavecca CER-100 for $14.25.

    2. Trim your hair at home. You don't have to empty your wallet at the salon for trims every three months! These razor sharp hair cutting shears use Japanese stainless-steel to trim your ends evenly and neatly. Trimming every few months is absolutely key to hair health, guys! It prevents split ends and breakage, and promotes hair growth. It's simple enough to do yourself but your dull kitchen scissors aren't gonna do the job!,

I invested in a pair after months of quarantine and not getting my hair cut left me with terrible split ends and lots of alarming breakage. I didn't want to ruin my hair further by using old scissors. I could tell the difference right away; these trimmed my ends so quickly and smoothly that I didn't even have to snap the scissors closed all the way — that's how sharp they were! I was able to control how much I trimmed and fix any uneven strands and jagged edges calmly and with confidence since the scissors cut so cleanly.

This comes coated with lubricating oil. Before first use, wash with soap and lukewarm water, then dry with a cloth.

Get it from Amazon for $19.97+ (available in three colors).

    3. Say hello to serums and essences — your hair's new best friends! These help your hair texture, taking your strands from rough to silky. Go for lightweight ones like Etude House Silk Scarf Hair Serum and Skinfood Argan Oil Hair Essence that use nutrients and fatty acids to boost hair health, soften and hydrate, replenish damage, and provide shine.

    the bottle

The Skinfood Hair Essence is my absolute fave. My hair gets weighed down easily by thick serums so I usually shy away from them. This one though is incredibly light, all but disappears into my strands, and leaves them soft, hydrated, and touchable. I like massaging it into my strands starting from mid-length and down to my ends after showers. Avoid the scalp, especially if you're prone to oiliness.

Promising review (for Etude House): "I'm usually pretty skeptical about hair products. I have very oily straight hair so not many hair products work well with it. However, I was pleasantly surprised that this spray didn't weigh my hair down; it just made my hair very soft and feel wonderful. I would recommend this for anyone with oily hair." —Daniel Smith

Get them from Amazon: the Etude House Silk Serum for $9.60 and the Skinfood Hair Essence for $14.

    4. Embrace oils to target specific hair concerns. Oils can be scary but the right ones (AKA the ones that are light and don't weigh your hair down) do wonders: from protecting your hair fibers, rebalancing moisture levels, and targeting UV damage like the salon-fave Shu Uemura Essence Protective Oil to strengthening, detangling, and moisturizing like the restorative Verb Ghost Hair Oil. Your dry, frizzy strands will become a ~ghost~ of the past.

Before of a model with frizzy long hair and then an after of the same model with sleek, frizz-free hair after using the product

For oils, you only need a pea-sized amount on your ends (rub the residue oil over the rest of your hair) so the product always lasts you a while!

I use Verb Ghost Hair Oil and it always makes my hair easy to comb. It also makes my ends look nice! It's so lightweight that it pretty much vanishes as soon as I put it in my hair, so my hair isn't oily and there's no residue left behind (love that). It also has a light citrus scent that's so lovely you'll be sad when it disappears.

Promising review (for Verb Ghost Oil): "I have very fine, dry, and damaged hair from years of bleaching and dyeing. I’m trying to go natural so I've been looking for anything to help soften and prevent breakage. I usually hate hair oils, and feel they make my hair sticky or greasy even only using a few drops. With this, I never have any issues! I use two drops when my hair is damp and spread it through, then one more drop mostly on the ends after styling. My hair looks glossy and is super soft. Never a greasy residue! Very lightweight, and I love the scent. Really can’t recommend it enough for fine hair. It seems like you can never use too much!" —tempestrune

Get Verb Ghost Oil from Amazon and Sephora for $18, and the Shu Uemura Protective Oil from Amazon for $44.97 and Sephora for $28+ (available in two sizes).

    5. Use a shampoo that actually addresses your hair's needs. The right shampoo makes a huge difference rather than just grabbing a generic drugstore one. For example, if your hair is thinning or needs volume, thickening shampoos like Klorane Shampoo with Quinine and B Vitamins and R+Co Dallas Biotin Shampoo stimulate hair growth with targeted ingredients that restore volume and hair health.

For a more budget-friendly option, try Love Beauty And Planet Thickening Shampoo for $10.50.

Promising review (for Klorane Shampoo with Quinine): "I first bought this shampoo and cream rinse in Italy. I loved it so much I found it on Amazon and cannot live without it now. It makes your hair feel soft and full. I have thyroid issues and have lost a lot of hair, this helps." —Haugen

Get them from Amazon: Klorane Shampoo for $22 and R+Co Shampoo for $29.

    6. Or repair damage and breakage with reparative shampoos that use effective ingredients to combat brittleness, split ends, and chemical damage. Garnier Whole Blends Honey Shampoo uses a yummy blend of royal jelly and honey while Moroccanoil Moisture Shampoo uses antioxidant-rich argan oil and herbals.

    Garnier Whole Blends,

Promising review (for Garnier Whole Blends): "I'm always amazed when I see this shampoo and conditioner for so cheap. It smells AMAZING, and the shampoo alone leaves my hair feeling a ton nicer than my old shampoo and conditioner! It feels like it's doing something super fantastic for my hair. It just feels so much healthier. This shampoo is GREATTTTT and a killer value! Do your hair a favor and try it!" —Yeah It's Lynn

Get them from Amazon: Garnier Whole Blends for $8.31 and Moroccanoil Moisture for $24.

    7. Reach for silk hair scrunchies and large hair claw clips instead of traditional hair elastics and sharp clips! These are actually gentler on hair because they won't cause wear and tear. Plus, silk scrunchies don't give your hair that annoying bend you get when you leave it up in a pony for a while. They hold firm and won't slip off. Large hair claws are also strong enough to hold both thick hair and thin hair easily.

Promising review: "As I've gotten older, I cannot tolerate a lot of the scrunchies I could in my younger years. At 27, my head has become more sensitive. These scrunchies are awesome! I have curly hair and wanted something that would hold my hair tightly, not make it hurt, but also not damage my hair. These are so soft, so many beautiful colors, and I even sleep with these scrunchies with no pain. Definitely worth every penny, especially because they're at a steal for this price. I've been rotating the same five ones for a few months now, and the elastic holds surprisingly well. They hold just like they did at first, they haven't stretched out, and they have not disintegrated. Amazing quality!" —Jess

Get them from Amazon: the claw clips for $9.99 and the scrunchies for $9.99.

    8. Exfoliate! Your! Scalp! News flash: Your scalp needs deep-cleaning care and exfoliation for much the same reasons your face does. Scalp scaling is a gentle form of exfoliation that removes oil and product build-up and balances both dry and oily scalps without the harshness of clarifying shampoos. They leave your scalp with less irritation, less dandruff, and less itchiness. After all, healthy hair starts at the root!

Esthetic House Scalp Scaler uses natural tea tree and sea salt to clean, soothe, and refresh. Rated Green Rosemary Scalp Scaler uses organic rosemary, sea salt, peppermint, and lavender to help reduce hair loss, balance oiliness, and rinse the scalp of buildup. Use them once a week or a couple times a month.

Promising review (for Rated Green Scalp Scaler): "Worked really well on my hair. I have oily hair with dandruff and my scalp felt nice and clean after using this. It also makes your hair really soft afterwards without weighing down your hair. I just put it on my scalp and scrub it in, let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse it through the rest of my hair." —Cassie

Get them from Amazon: Esthetic House Scalp Scaler for $17 and Rated Green Rosemary Scalp Scaler for $19.99.

    9. Or opt for a detox shampoo like OGX Charcoal Detox Shampoo, which uses coconut charcoal and kaolin clay (two ingredients that are used in face masks to help with oily skin too!) to purify and rid your hair of buildup, leaving it nice and balanced. Use this in place of your regular shampoo once a week!

    The shampoo

Promising review: "One thing I've always appreciated about OGX is that their products work for every hair type. I have mostly 4B/4C hair, and it worked great. My scalp felt clean, I could feel it breathe. The shampoo didn't dry my hair out, which is usually what happens with clarifying shampoo. My hair did get tangled, but that's where the conditioner comes in. As soon as I apply the conditioner, the tangles were gone and I could easily run my fingers through my hair. So if you're looking for a decent clarifying shampoo and conditioner that's cheap, invest in this. I recommend moisturizing your hair after this, maybe even doing a deep condition if you have time." —RegalRoyal

Get it from Amazon for $8.99.

    10. Feed your hair the necessary nutrients it needs with pre-shower treatments that'll ensure your strands come out, well, not feeling like a witch's broom. A scalp detox like Act + Acre's is a good option that uses organic botanical oils to nourish, soothe, promote hair growth, and protect against environmental damage. A castor oil treatment will help deliver vitamins and fatty acids while repairing damage., Act + Acre

For oil treatments, you can massage the oil all over your hair and keep it like that overnight before washing it out the next day, or you can simply do it an hour or two before showering.

Promising review (for the scalp detox): "Been using for nearly a month and already see the benefits to my scalp health. When extra oil seeps from scalp to hair, it doesn't hurt, my hair seems to like it as much as my scalp. The ingredients are so clean and the smell is subtle but pleasant. All around pleased and can't wait to try more from this line." —Lucy

Get the scalp detox from Act + Acre for $42 and the Sky Organics castor oil from Amazon for $15.99.

In my life, I have never had a brush get tangles and matts out with such ease. It makes hair brushing enjoyable and painless. It gets out the knots within seconds and without the pain I used to experience with other types of brushes. I hardly lose any hair using this brush because it is so gentle. Promising review: "Stop searching and buy this! I purchased this purple shampoo on a whim after seeing it on a BuzzFeed article. THIS SHAMPOO, let me tell you, has pulled any and every unwanted orange color from my hair. The shampoo is PURPLE, almost black. It reeks to high heaven, but so do most toners and glazes a salon would put on, so it's really not an issue to me. I use it once a week and leave it on for about five minutes while I shave in shower, and it does its job. Within two weeks it pulled all the orange brassiness from my hair and has left me with a wintery icy blonde that I never thought my hair could be. I love it so much and don't know what state of pumpkin I would be without this shampoo." —Lenna K.
