29 "Schitt's Creek" Behind-The-Scenes Facts That'll Make These Iconic Moments Even More Memorable

Dan Levy and the writers wrote "seven drafts" of Alexis and Ted's final scene.

🚨Warning: There are some MASSIVE spoilers ahead!🚨

    1. First, when filming the Herb Ertlinger fruit wine commercial, they actually filmed a version where Moira vomits after finishing her speech — Catherine O'Hara hilariously suggested it.

Catherine said that it was one of her worst ideas and she's glad Dan shot it down.

    2. A fan once told Dan Levy that he used David's iconic "I like the wine and not the label" metaphor to come out to his family.

David telling Stevie, "I like the wine, and not the label. Does that make sense?"

Dan said, "I thought that's a pretty amazing thing. That's something you don't think about when you are sitting down to write a television show."

    3. When Patrick sings the cover of "Simply the Best" to David, Noah Reid actually composed this version of the song himself.

Noah recorded a voice memo of what he wanted the song to sound like and sent it to Dan, and Dan immediately knew this is what he wanted.

    4. Also, Catherine cried through the entire "Simply the Best" scene — basically, it was hard to get a take that didn't feature Moira weeping.

    5. Moira's iconic pronunciation of "bébé" was created by Catherine during filming.

Moira saying, "Oh, she has no idea of the toll a bébé can take on its mother, or its mother's mother"
    Pop / CBC

She explained, "I said 'bébé' as a joke or a mistake the first time. Once I hit on 'bébé' and got a laugh from the crew, that was it."

    6. Annie Murphy co-wrote "A Little Bit Alexis" with her husband Menno Versteeg, who fronts the band Hollerado.

The song was inspired by Britney Spears and Paris Hilton's work.

    7. Also, when Dan and Eugene Levy were originally pitching the show, Alexis's character description included that she had a reality show called A Little Bit Alexis.

So, this idea was there from the very beginning.

    8. Eugene absolutely hated filming the scene when Johnny's hair gets wet from the drip in the motel.

    9. While filming the hilarious "fold in the cheese" moment, Dan came up with the idea that Moira should pronounce "enchilada" like "un-chilada" and he was nervous to give Catherine the note at first.

    10. One of the scenes Annie and Tim Rozon performed during their chemistry read was when Alexis finds out about Twyla and Mutt sleeping together.

In the documentary Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: A Schitt's Creek Farewell, Annie explained that she hadn't worked "in over two years" before her Schitt's Creek audition and she felt like the universe was screaming at her, "This is not for you."

    11. It took hairstylist Ana Sorys several weeks to figure out how to make Moira's hair crown, and the original wig was only 40 inches long, so Ana added an extra 20 inches.

    Pop / CBC

Ana used a glue that she used to put down tiles in her kitchen in order to get the hair to stay in place. This glue also didn't discolor the wig at all.

    12. Growing up, Emily Hampshire's dream role was playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret — she even told Dan this when they were filming Season 1.

Emily said, "All of my dreams were coming true. I can't imagine getting a gift like that again. It was everything."

    13. In real life, Annie and Dustin Milligan are about the same height, so when Annie has Alexis's heels on, Dustin actually had to stretch or stand on a box to kiss her.

Dustin joked, "So, not only am I craning my neck forward like some kind of ungodly giraffe trying to kiss her, but also I’m propped up because, not actually tall enough for that to be even."

    14. Catherine laughed the hardest while filming the scene when David and Moira are selling Allez-Vous makeup and David has bronzer all over his face.

    Pop / CBC

Catherine said, "[Dan] looked like a goldfish caught in headlights. I couldn't stop [laughing]. I was so unprofessional."

    15. Once Annie found the perfect inflection for the iconic way Alexis says "David," she would add "David" into as many lines as she could.

Annie pointed out that she doesn't say the phrase "Ew, David" a lot, but she loves that "people have run with it."

    16. Although we only see a short portion of Moira singing "Danny Boy," Catherine sang the entire song during one take.

    Pop / CBC

Dan recalled, "She sang that entire song, to the point where she started going into like, 'Are you really going to keep doing this? Can I stop soon?'"

    17. Dan got to keep Rose Apothecary's first receipt, which Patrick gave to David on their first date in Season 3.

Patrick saying, "Oh, it's just the receipt from our first sale at the store" and David saying that it's not nothing

    18. Dan rewrote the moment when Patrick and David are in the car before they kiss for the first time while on the way to set — Dan was actually on the phone with Noah telling him the new lines.

    19. Eugene's favorite episode of Schitt's Creek is "Meet the Parents," when Patrick comes out to his parents.

    20. When they filmed "The Hike," it was really hot out that day and there was poison ivy everywhere when David and Patrick were walking up the trail.

    21. It took nearly seven hours to film the moment when David is on the obstacle course in the air while Patrick, Alexis, and Ted watch — Dan said he got "very wobbly" while filming and Annie kept forgetting her lines.

    Pop / CBC

Noah and Dustin both tried the obstacle course in between takes.

    22. One of the last scenes Dustin and Annie filmed together was when Ted and Alexis heartbreakingly say goodbye to each other.

    Pop / CBC

Annie said, "It was a goodbye for the characters, but it was also a goodbye for Dustin and me."

    23. Also, Dan and the writers wrote about "seven drafts" of Alexis and Ted's breakup scene before they landed on what is shown in the episode.

In the documentary Best Wishes, Warmest Regards: A Schitt's Creek Farewell, Dan explained, "It's really hard to tell the story of a love story that in the end, is still a love story. It didn't end because they stopped loving each other, it ended because circumstance stood in their way. That circumstance was their own growth, and that's a wonderful thing."

    24. The moment when Moira and David perform the Christmas medley together was originally only supposed to include Moira, but Catherine suggested Dan join in.

    Pop / CBC

She even sent Dan a voice memo with his harmonies in order to convince him.

    25. Dan was nervous to film the moment when David lip-synchs "Simply the Best" to Patrick — Dan said it's one of the few scenes he doesn't think he'll ever watch from the show.

    Pop / CBC

There wasn't a lot of rehearsal for the moment and Dan even drank some Prosecco beforehand to get ready.

    26. Both Annie and Emily think one of the funniest scenes to film was when the crows attack everyone at the Crows Have Eyes III: The Crowening premiere — all of the birds were CGI, so they were reacting to nothing while filming.

    Pop / CBC

Emily said, "It was fucking hilarious because we didn’t have crows…To do any kind of stuff with CGI, you always as an actor end up looking stupid."

    27. The last scene the cast and crew ever filmed at Café Tropical was when Twyla reveals to Alexis that she's actually a multi-millionaire.

    28. The entire cast actually joined the Jazzagals when they recorded the vocals for "Precious Love" and "Simply the Best" for David and Patrick's wedding.

    Pop / CBC

They all sat around and listened to them record it, and they actually recorded it on set.

    29. And finally, the last scene Annie, Dan, and Catherine filmed was when David, Alexis, Patrick, and Stevie say goodbye to Moira and Johnny outside the motel, so a lot of those tears are genuine.

Annie said, "Those tears are not fake tears, those are very real tears. I think you can just basically see Annie Murphy and Dan Levy and it's not David and Alexis. It's the two of us having a real cry."
