23 "All The Bright Places" Differences Between The Book And Movie

    "Ultraviolet Remarkey-able, I think I love you."

Warning: There are MASSIVE spoilers ahead for the book and movie.

    1. First, Violet and Finch actually meet at school in a bell tower — Finch sees Violet standing on the ledge and talks her down.

    2. Before Finch dies, he actually texts Violet quotes that relate to three final wandering locations — this is also how Violet knows where to find him in the end.

    3. One of the final places is the shoe tree they visit together early in the movie.

    4. In the church, Violet finds a song written by Finch that he left behind for her.

    5. Finch learns that he has bipolar disorder, and Mr. Embry is the first person to discuss it with him — it's also one of the reasons he attends the support group.

    6. Finch constantly talks about the "Awake" and the "Asleep," which is how he distinguishes between his manic and depressive days.

    7. Finch's mom plays a huge role in his life. Instead of simply being gone, she's a working single mother.

    8. Also, in the book, Finch's dad plays a huge role in his life — Finch and his sisters actually attend dinner with him every Sunday. Finch's dad has a new family, and it's alluded to that he also has bipolar disorder.

    9. Finch creates various personas for himself, such as '80s Finch, British Badass Finch, and Nerd Finch.

    10. Finch's sticky notes play a much larger role in the book — he puts ideas, good words, song lyrics, quotes, and things that remind him of Violet on the notes.

    11. Finch calls Violet his "Jovian-Plutonian gravitational effect" because he feels better whenever she's around.

    12. For the movie, they combined two characters: Roamer and Eric — in the book, Eric is Violet's ex-boyfriend and Roamer is Eric's friend and bullies Finch.

    13. Also, Roamer and Finch's big fight results in Finch getting expelled, which stops him from finishing the project with Violet.

    14. In class, when Finch wants to be partners with Violet, he actually declares to the entire class "Violet Markey, I'd like to be your partner on this project."

    15. One of the wanderings Violet and Finch visit is a trailer that was turned into a library — throughout the novel, Finch is searching for a copy of The Waves by Virginia Woolf.

    16. When Finch and Violet visit the "Before I Die" wall, Finch also writes, "Before I die, I want to kiss Violet Markey."

    17. In the book, Violet feels guilty about Eleanor's death because she made Eleanor take the route over the bridge the night they crashed.

    18. It's explained that Violet's glasses were actually Eleanor's — she wears them to remember her, and eventually she stops once she's able to move on.

    19. Violet wants to be a writer and had a website that she curated with Eleanor — we catch only a glimpse of it in the movie.

    20. Later, Violet creates a new website called Germ, which several of her classmates and Finch's friends write for.

    21. Instead of using Instagram, Finch uses Facebook to get Violet's attention for the first time — he creates an account just for her.

    22. Finch stops at a nursery to pick out some flowers because he wants Violet to know that he's "thinking of her and that this isn't a season of death, but one for living."

    23. And finally, Finch gives Violet the adorable nickname "Ultraviolet Remarkey-able."
