With sprawling shorelines featuring a beach break friendly to both learners and seasoned-shredders alike, catching some cold-water waves will be a breeze by Sunday afternoon.

Tofino

Just a short drive away from Tofino, Ucluelet (or as the locals call it, Ukee) provides a neighboring take on the storm and surf culture that exists down the road in Tofino. As a quiet coastal town rich in activities, Ukee boasts an appeal for weekend warriors seeking both adventure and relaxation. You can paddle out to surf, hike around the iconic lighthouse and through old growth forests along the Wild Pacific trail, or convene with sea life on a kayak tour. A short ferry ride or float plane offers passage to this coastal getaway, Galiano is a great option for those looking to cut down on driving time. Rich in scenery, open-air markets, hiking trails and quiet coastlines, Galiano offers a wonderful location for those wanting to settle sea-side with a glass of wine, or set up camp in one of the provincial campgrounds for the weekend.

The markets on Salt Spring are legendary, where everything is made, grown or foraged on the island itself. With a variety of charming accommodation from campgrounds to farm stays, it’ll be easy to walk, bike or drive on to the ferry depending on your budget.

This Howe Sound haven is the ideal weekend warrior destination for those travelling from Vancouver or the Lower Mainland. Only a twenty-minute ferry ride away from Horseshoe Bay Terminal, travelling to Bowen is easier than most morning commutes in the city. If you’re an outdoor adventure seeker, this small island has more than enough to offer as well. Kayak in the morning and be belaying by lunchtime, or hike/forage the day away and find yourself on a stand-up paddle board by sundown. Bowen also offers tons of options for those looking for a more low-key stay, such as yoga and some awesome local art hubs to stroll through. This little Gulf island tucked away on the Salish sea is a cabin-dwellers paradise. This dreamy hideaway settles deep into nature and encourages visitors to dive into themselves and the scenery around them through relaxation and bliss. If you’re keen for a faster-paced weekend, however, Hornby does offer a variety of mountain biking trails, amazing cold-water snorkelling and diving, as well as fishing and sightseeing charters through Hornby Island Ocean Adventures. With cabins, farmhouses and beachfront property available year-round, Hornby will be your perfect destination to cozy up next to the fire after a day of adventuring bliss.

Jordan River is Vancouver Island’s lesser-known surf hideaway with some swells that can spell out a winter surfer’s dream. This well-kept secret is the go-to for those wanting swells without the crowds that other popular towns can draw in. Only two hours from Victoria, Sombrio beach throws off Tofino surf vibes but maintains a bit more secrecy. While accommodation may be sparse, camping or van travel is common around these parts. If the vagabond life isn’t for you, nearby Sooke and Port Renfrew offer plenty of accommodation to house those keen for a bigger roof over their heads!
