For Brood II, one of the largest of the 15 colonies of periodical cicadas recognized in the United States, it is about time to emerge and have crazy insect sex over a period of a couple days, before leaving their young to start another 17-year stretch of living underground. but not everyone is excited about 30 billion (possibly more?) inch-long, red-eyed, extremely loud insects emerging from the ground.
