Which ALA Division Are You?

Do you like being behind the scenes or front and center?

What type of library would you like to work in?

Would you like to run your own library someday?

Your work in schools with children and teenagers is tremendously important: you’re working to set our young people on a path of lifelong learning with solid reading, research skills, and voracious curiosity. The unique challenges of school librarianship mean you should join AASL, the American Association of School Librarians, the only national professional organization for school librarians and school libraries.  
There are three sections: Educators of School Librarians, Independent Schools, and Supervisors. There are two special interest groups: Retirees and Students. For more information, go to .

Detail-oriented and methodical, you should fit right in with the good people of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services. These are the folks that focus on collection development, cataloging, and organization. If you like information structures and information organization, this is the place for you!

No matter what kind of library you’re in, you are focused on providing library services to children and youth. That means that ALSC, the Association for Library Service to Children, is the place for you. Among the resources they have for you are booklists, free webinars, and clear core competencies for library workers like you.

Congratulations, you’re **ALSC**!

Perhaps you’re a subject librarian, a research and instruction specialist, or maybe you just like the intellectual vigor of an academic environment… but clearly ACRL has a place for you. The Association of College and Research Libraries includes sections, discussion groups, and interest groups on specific areas of academic and professional expertise, including rare books and manuscripts, subject specialties, copyright, pursuing tenure, and many more - there are 15 sections and 34 communities of practice to choose from!   
ACRL has useful publications, discussion forums, continuing education opportunities, and a wide variety of ways to get involved. Check out the member section on our website for more information.

You have a special dedication to service and library access for all: you might be part of a government library, a library consortium, or you’re working outside a traditional library setting. You belong in ASCLA, the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies, which supports library workers involved with cooperative systems, state library agencies, consultants, and libraries serving underserved populations like the incarcerated or the disabled.   
ASCLA provides you with a variety of professional networking, development, and support opportunities. Be sure to check out some general information about us, and maybe watch the introductory webcast.

You’re passionate about information technology and its role in providing education and services to the public, from technology neophytes to the high-tech experts. LITA, the Library and Information Technology Association, is the place for you! LITA has a special focus on the impact of emerging and automated technologies, promotes the development of technical standards, and provides information for learning about new tech.  
LITA has a New Member Interest group to help introduce you to the division, and there are a wide variety of committees and interest groups. Check it all out at .

You have what it takes to lead, and may already have solid leadership skills. Joining LLAMA, the Library Leadership and Management Association, will provide you with great resources and contacts to help you refine and develop your leadership and management abilities. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to be in a management or leadership position to join LLAMA - we welcome those who aspire to leadership with just as much enthusiasm!  
Communities of Practice in LLAMA include those focusing on assessment, buildings, marketing, and more - but you don’t need to choose one when you join. LLAMA is a single-rate membership, and you get access to all the communities for that price. Don’t know where to begin? You’re driven to serve your community members of all ages and interests, from the very young to the very elderly, and you value freedom of information and patron privacy. You belong in PLA, the Public Library Association, the ALA home for those who work in public libraries. Interest groups look at issues like early literacy and family engagement, and the daunting task of performance measurement.

You belong in RUSA, the Reference and User Services Association!

You’ve got an interest in library advocacy at every level. You belong in United for Libraries, the ALA home of library trustees, Friends groups, foundations, and other library support groups. United For Libraries is an invaluable resource at the local level, but also helps lead national efforts like National Library Legislative Day, and sends representatives to Washington, DC to meet with members of Congress on behalf of America’s libraries.

YALSA, the Young Adult Library Services Association, is the place for you! Join similar-minded library workers in a dynamic community focused on library services and resources for teenagers.
