Common Neopets Misconceptions In 2016!

Neopets, that super popular virtual pets site from 1999, is still up and running! Check out some of the common misconceptions you may have about Neopets!

Posted on

1. Neopets is not a children's game.

Neopets was founded by college students, and was originally meant as a social platform for college students alike. The association of cartoon like "pets", brought up a stigma that it was created for kids. As answered by TNT themselves, in the Neopian Times:I hear so many different stories as to why Neopets was created, and people use these to justify ageism - which is just wrong in my opinion. Some say it's made for college students only, some say for adults, some say for little children. My question is originally, WHY was Neopets created?Originally, the site was designed for bored college students. Obviously, however, the site has broadened quite a bit since then, and there are people of all ages who play Neopets. If you are a young player, don't be surprised to hear that many successful players are adults, parents, and even grandparents! There is such a wide variety of things to do, it's quite understandable that people of all ages find aspects of Neopets fun, relaxing, or just a great way to kill time while at home or the office! ;D

2. Neopets is no longer owned by Viacom.

Neopets was originally owned by Adam and Donna, than sold onto Viacom. With the diminishing interest in the site, Viacom than sold it over to Jumpstart! Yes Jumpstart, the company that made many of our beloved childhood games, such as Math Blaster! They acquired the company in April 2014.

3. Keyquest, Habitarium, Petpetpark, and Moneykuest have been discontinued.

With the transition to the Jumpstart Servers, which I assume were more low-end than the ones Viacom owned, Neopets had to let go of four of their beloved sub-games; Keyquest, Habitarium, Petpetpark, and Monkeyquest. Letting go of Keyquest was probably the most devastating for most, however, they have stated they will bring back just that in the future.

4. The Neopian economy has not gone up.

The Neopian economy has not gone up, as many would have assumed over the years. With a growing supply, and lessening demanding, it is going downwards in trend. TNT also does not want it to go up, as they figured it would be unfair to new members. To combat this, they have been making higher end items more accessible to newer players. The perfect example of this would be Draik Morphing Potions. The potions were at there peak of 14,000,000NP in 2009, and since then, have tanked all the way down to 300,000NP, due to TNT releasing the potions through dailies. Another example would be Dr. Sloth auctions, in which they auction off high end stamps for 1NP (high end, as in stamps worth hundreds of millions).

5. Neopets is not surviving off old art work.

Though there site is still running off 2000s code, some of their graphics are not. They have been updating and releasing new neopets drawings, map drawings, shop keeper drawings, and more!

6. Neopets is now, and has in recent years, been turned into a solely revenue driven site.

What started off in the early years, with constant plots, and newly released items and content daily, is no longer a reality. We are now accustomed to seeing re-used content yearly, the last real plot was in 2010 (I said "real", not mini-plots they try to pass off as real plots). Despite all this, you can always be sure they release Neocash items daily, and have an abundant of Neocash events.

7. You can now get Neopoints for only $2.99 for 1,000,000NP!

That's right! You no longer have to play for hours to earn your neopoints! You can get neopoints, neopets accounts and other neopets products at such sites like http://www.neopointsdeals.com.

8. You no longer get banned for inappropriate Neoboard behavior.

Neopets found that banning people for inappropriate conduct on the boards was diminishing their population, so they stopped banning people, rather they silenced them. When you get silenced, you are unable to post on the boards, have a coded user lookup, put notes on trades, and etc.

9. The Altador Plot is still happening.

I guess they just wanted to always have a plot remaining for new users, so they kept the Altador Plot up forever.

10. Neopets is not a secure site, even in 2016.

Similar to that in 2004, another mass dupe day happened in 2014, in which many high end items were duplicated. From there, users mass donated these items, traded them, auctioned them, and more! TNT did not act quick, allowing for a mass-condominium, which still have a large affect on the economy today.

11. Neopets does have an app!

Yes, after many years, they have finally released an app. Though it's not an app that allows you to play Neopets (which they announced in 2014, but never released) , it's an app that allows you to earn Neopoints and items. The app is called "Ghoul Catchers".

12. You can now dress up your Neopets as being stoned.

Yes the above is an actual customization acquirable on neopets.com!

13. Neopets now offshores its content.

With budgets being tight, Neopets had to lay off many of it's workers, and obtain offshore workers from India to provide it's content. Most of these content writers have no knowledge of Neopets, and make absurd statements which make no sense.

14. There is no limit to how many neopoints you can have.

False! Neopets decided to use 32-bit values, since they never assumed someone would go over that, so the max anyone can have is 2,147,483,647NP (2 billion)!

15. Jelly World is not real...

Misconception? I wonder why this ended up on this list. I've never heard of this Jelly World.
