Much like the red wolf, you are one of a kind! Red wolves are family-oriented, more introverted, and come alive at night. One of two wolf species found in North America — the other is the more well-known gray wolf — red wolves are incredibly rare and critically endangered. Originally found throughout the southeastern states, red wolves were wiped out by humans. In the 1980s, the last remaining wild red wolves were captured for captive breeding programs. Today, there are only 10 red wolves found in the wild and they still face persecution from people. The rest live in zoos as conservation efforts continue.

Much like the javelina, there’s more to you than meets the eye! Javelina are medium-sized mammals found in the southwestern states. They look like wild pigs, but don’t be fooled by appearances. They are not pigs at all, or even related to pigs. True wild pigs are native to Africa, Asia, and Europe. Javelina are actually a kind of peccary — their other name is collared peccary — that is found only in the Americas. Though they have piglike snouts, they have different toes, teeth, tails, ears, digestive tracts, and separate evolutionary history. Javelina are social animals, living in family groups. They produce a stinky musk, earning them the nickname “skunk pig.” Most Americans have never heard of them, but if you live in certain parts of Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas, javelina might just show up in your backyard as squirrels do elsewhere.

Much like the hellbender, you might be considered a little odd by others — but it’s your quirks that make you special. Hellbenders tend to go their own way, and enjoy the quiet country life offers. Hellbenders are large aquatic salamanders that live in the clear, cold streams of the eastern United States. They look like creatures out of a fantasy film, with flat bodies that make them streamlined in the swift-moving water and let them hide under rocks on the stream bottom. They have big heads with tiny eyes, and skin flaps that allow them to absorb oxygen straight from the water. Their skin is protected by a covering of slimy mucus, earning them the nickname “snot otter”— perhaps not the kindest description, but it’s what makes hellbenders perfectly adapted to their homes.

You are sometimes underestimated, but you are brave and fierce! Always trying new things, you are cute as a button but tough as nails. Everyone knows about the gray squirrel, a familiar backyard species across a wide swath of the United States. But did you know that its cousin — the flying squirrel — is just as common? So why do you never see them? It’s because unlike other squirrels, flying squirrels are nocturnal and they generally like to stay up in the trees, rather than forage on the ground. Since humans aren’t hanging out in the treetops at night, most people have no idea that these adorable squirrels are their neighbors. Despite their name, they don’t fly like bats but glide using a flap of skin called a patagium that grows between their front and back legs. Flying squirrels are also the only gliding mammals found in North America. And unlike those gray squirrels — which feed mostly on seeds, nuts, and buds — flying squirrels are actually highly carnivorous, hunting down insects and birds and even devouring carrion in addition to normal squirrel fare.

If you are a mountain beaver, you are a homebody who loves to be cozy and loves the beauty that life in the mountains offers. Mountain beavers aren’t actually beavers. They are ancient rodents unique to North America that you’ve probably never heard of, unless you’re from the Pacific Northwest. Mountain beavers have beady eyes, big curved teeth, and exaggerated overbites. They dig deep burrows and live a largely solitary life, never straying far from their homes — except to find mates and to venture out to feed on the vegetation. One of the strangest things about mountain beavers is, well, their poop habits. While feeding, they expel two kinds of poop pellets, which they gather in their mouths. They deposit the hard pellets into special “toilet burrows” but eat the soft pellets, which still have a lot of nutrients in them, to digest them a second time.

Much like the periodical cicada, you march to the beat of your own drum. You have a fascinating life cycle. Cicadas are incredibly long-lived for insects. Cicadas hatch from eggs laid under the bark of trees and drop to the ground and burrow into the soil, where they feed on plant roots until emerging from the soil as adults to mate and repeat the process. Annual cicadas do this each year, but several species of periodical cicadas spend either 13 or 17 years underground. Then the entire population of nymphs dig to the surface, climb up the stem of a plant, and shed their skin to reveal their winged adult form. In these emergence years, millions of cicadas suddenly appear all at once, covering the landscape and creating a cacophony with their loud buzzing call.
