"I almost cried five times."

John Mayer is facing backlash for his comments following the reflections he made on male privilege in the music industry following Framing Britney Spears.

"I almost cried five times during that," John told Andy Cohen on SiriusXM. "I mean, I was on the edge of tears five times, because if you understand what this business/industry/lifestyle does to a person. To go through this and come out the other side OK, is to have infinite grace for those who struggle with it."

"I came out OK. ... I have a very strong feeling that part of that is because I'm a man," he continued. "And I have a very strong feeling that a lot of these things that happen to female performers is endemic to being female."

However, some people weren't buying John's comments — given his own treatment of women in the public eye.

The first name many pointed to was Jessica Simpson, who John dated on and off during the '00s.

I mean you could start with apologizing to Jessica Simpson lol https://t.co/fR1eGztVJs

lol...anyway, read Jessica Simpson's memoir if you want to know what this dude is like https://t.co/KisLMTQfPC

John previously made derogatory comments about Jessica, telling Playboy in 2010, "Sexually it was crazy. That's all I'll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm. Did you ever say, 'I want to quit my life and just fucking snort you? If you charged me $10,000 to fuck you, I would start selling all my shit just to keep fucking you.'"

In the same interview, John used the n-word and said, "My dick is sort of like a white supremacist." He later apologized for using the slur and for his comments to Jessica, which she did not accept.

As for Jessica, she wrote in her memoir of John: “Again and again, he told me he was obsessed with me, sexually and emotionally."

Jessica refers to it as, "The start of me relying on alcohol to mask my nerves." Jessica then says she told John she drank too much, but he reportedly just gave her Xanax.

Another name that people mentioned was Taylor Swift, who John dated when he was 32 and she was 19 years old.

taylor swift still isnt as old as john mayer was when he dated her while she was a teenager https://t.co/XHzEc2CXyV

something that doesn’t get discussed enough is that the “careful she’ll write a song about you” jokes and the “taylor swift is crazy and boy obsessed” narrative was principally fuelled by john mayer after she (19) wrote a song detailing his (32) emotional abuse

did this man not date a 19 year old Taylor Swift while he was 31 https://t.co/mjkDBmxvn7

Did John ever apologize to Jessica and the way he spoke about women in general? In interviews he SUCCESSFULLY ducked the Taylor age gap controversy ONLY TO TURN AROUND and release a song about her years later(2013) when he saw the media was on her ass for "dating too many men" https://t.co/WXLu1YPpCa

Taylor's own thoughts are widely thought to have been the inspiration for her song "Dear John."

One lyric of the song says, "Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone/ Don't you think I was too young to be messed with?"

John called this, "Cheap song writing." He poked fun at Taylor's song lyrics as recently as 2019.

In short:

The levels of irony here are off the charts. https://t.co/YrsNvMQWgb
