    Kendrick Lamar's 2022 Super Bowl halftime performance got me thinking nonsense: Most people don't understand any references to '90s Black movies.

    No, they were not random bleach-haired Black Panthers. Their appearance was a reference to the antagonists the Golden Lords from the 1993 Robert Townsend film Meteor Man. Yes, Kendrick deserved his own full-length performance.

    We can't have y'all in these streets thinking the Kardashians and TikTok stars are the ones who came up with all these hilarious memes and trends.

    Believe it or not, before the days of mostly trauma porn and Tyler Perry movies, Black cinema was thriving in a major way. You couldn't go a week in theaters during the 1990s without seeing at least one new Black movie pop up.

    * Black movies do sell. Check the numbers.

    * There were only a relative handful of Black actors, so you’ll recognize the same cast members in several movies. Many of them are still working today, and it remains an issue.

    * Many household names today got their start decades ago as children and teenagers, so put some respect on their names. 

    * You don’t have to be Black to enjoy these films.
