"Is any of it real?!!"
Everyone is captivated by a new hacker collective called fsociety, which releases cryptic videos threatening the corrupt corporations that are controlling the world. Their prime target is a giant, evil financial mega-corporation called E Corp.
Elliot is a vigilante hacker who uses his computer skills to serve justice to his friends and neighbors and find out what secrets they’re hiding. He’s also a low-level computer tech who handles cybersecurity for E Corp. He’s a little bit unstable, but he’s okay as long as he stays on his medication.
One night on the subway, a guy named Mr. Robot introduces himself to Elliot. He’s the head of fsociety, the hacker group that threatened E Corp. Mr. Robot knows that Elliot is a great hacker, and he recruits him to work for fsociety to help take down E Corp.
Elliot meets another fsociety hacker, Darlene. She’s a badass who doesn’t take any BS from anyone. Her ideas are a little too aggressive for Elliot’s taste, but they begin devising a plan to take out E Corp and “save the world.” They also enlist Angela, a childhood friend of Elliot’s who works at E Corp, to feed them information from the inside.
This is Tyrell Wellick. He’s an executive at E Corp, and he strongly suspects that Elliot is up to something. He’s obsessed with climbing the corporate ladder at any cost, and he does some outlandish stuff to get there. He sets his sights on stopping...whatever it is Elliot is up to.
As the plan comes together and pressure mounts, Elliot begins to lose his grip on reality. He discovers that Mr. Robot is a) his dead father and b) a manifestation of his splintered mind due to a Dissociative Identity Disorder. Elliot is the actual leader of fsociety and the guy who made the fsociety videos. He’s also Darlene’s brother. Are any other characters figments of Elliot’s imagination? Can we trust anything we’ve seen in this show so far? WE. JUST. DON’T. KNOW.
Elliot wakes up with three days missing from his memory. During that time, fsociety executed a hack on E Corp. Everyone’s debt has been permanently deleted, and Tyrell Wellick is the prime suspect. Did he actually do it, or was he framed by Elliot/Mr. Robot? We don’t know. Even Elliot doesn’t know! E Corp is in shambles, people are in the streets cheering for fsociety, and the future is up in the air.
The world thinks Tyrell Wellick was behind the E Corp attack. Elliot and Darlene set out to discover stage two of Elliot’s plan, which he came up with but doesn’t remember. Meanwhile, Angela plants a virus on the FBI’s computer system to help Elliot and Darlene evade the authorities. On top of all that, another hacker group called The Dark Army begins hunting down and executing the members of fsociety.
White Rose, the mysterious leader of The Dark Army, contacts Angela to test her loyalty. It seems The Dark Army has no need for fsociety, but they are interested in working more closely with Elliot. What are they planning?
The Dark Army finally catches up with Darlene, and Elliot finally encounters Tyrell, who appears to be real and alive...maybe (tbh, you can never be too sure with this show). Elliot tells Tyrell that he won’t help with stage two of the attack, which involves blowing up an E Corp building. Tyrell shoots Elliot to prevent him from aborting the attack. This seems real, but is it? WE NEED TO KNOW!!!!!
