Dozens of new ultra-diffuse galaxies discovered in the galaxy cluster Abell 2744
Astronomers have discovered a total of 76 new ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) inside of a massive cluster of galaxies Abell 2744 (also known as Pandora's Cluster of galaxies). This discovery allows to enlarge the list of galaxies that make up this cluster, as well as helping to better understand the nature of UDG-type galaxies in general. UDG are galaxies with extremely low density. The largest of UDG have a size close to the size of the Milky Way, but in this case they contain on average about 100 times fewer stars than our own galaxy.
