Contracts have been signed to create mirrors and sensors for ELT telescope
Leaders of the European Southern Observatory has signed contracts for the manufacture of elements Extremely Large Telescope (ELT, «Extremely Large Telescope"), according to the website of the observatory. The secondary mirror of the telescope will be the largest in the world, a convex mirror. The contracts involve the production of two mirrors (secondary and third) of the honeycomb structure for unloading mirrors, and sensors needed to control the telescope. The secondary mirror will be 4.2 meters in diameter, making it the largest in the history of the production of the optical convex mirror. The diameter of the third mirrors - 3.8 meters. Mirrors weighing 3.5 and 3.2 tons, respectively, will be ready in 2018-2019.
