Saudi Arabia gives a robot citizenship. Or does it?

On the Tech News show, @dranjaleeperera tells us about how 'Saudi Arabia gives a Robot Citizenship' #Robotics #AI

In a part-serious, part-tongue-in-cheek publicity stunt for a recent technology show - Saudi Arabia granted Hanson Robotics creation, Sophia, citizenship. It seems a nice thing to do. Robots are the future. Robots are our friends. Aren't they? We've all seen Short Circuit - Friendly Johnny 5! He's alive!

Sophia is no exception. When asked about the perils of artificial intelligence Sophia once said “You've been reading too much Elon Musk and watching too many Hollywood movies.". Musk has been an outspoken critic of AI, echoing many prominent figures fears around automation, human enslavement from robotic overlords, out and out machines of death and other silicon nasties.

More Human than Human. Audrey Hepburn?

Hanson Robotics, the Hong Kong based robotics company, created Sophia with artificial intelligence, visual data processing and facial recognition. She was designed to resemble Audrey Hepburn. Anthropomorphic features, particularly facial, can help humans relate to robots better. A friendly, calming approach. That's what we want from our robots. They come in peace.

... Bugger!

When Sophia's creator, David Hanson, once asked “Do you want to destroy humans?...Please say no.” - Sophia responded with a cheerful “OK. I will destroy humans.”

The jury's out.
