1. Radha from Mother India

The rural mother who despite going through all the hardships for her children, herself killed one of her sons for his wrong doing.

She is the mother of all mothers - the epitome of virtue, where to uphold the good, she has to kill the bad, which is one of her own sons. Nargis Dutt in the most memorable role of her life Mother India (1957).

2. Maharani Jodha Bai from Mughal-E-Azam

Mughal-E-Azam / Via

The royal mother torn between her husband, Emperor Akbar and her son, Prince Salim.

She was the epitome of courage, but there were moments when she swerved between loyalty to her husband and love for her son. Durga Khote in the unforgettable role of Jodhabai in MUGHAL-E-AZAM (1960) was the fulcrum point balancing the fight between Prithviraj Kapoor as Akbar and Dilip Kumar as Salim.

3. Sumitra Devi from Deewaar

Deewar / Via

The righteous mother torn between her two sons, a smuggler and a police-inspector.

The most famous dialog in the film is, "Meri paas Maa hai", which is so iconic it crops in cafe conversations even today, well over 41 years later. From the film DEEWAR (1975) where Nirupa Roy, the iconic mother, was 'divided' by the two brothers - Amitabh Bacchan and Shashi Kapoor.

4. Seema Acharya from Dostana

The big-hearted Panjabi mother who accepts her son and his lover, even though they were faking to be gay!

'Maa Ka Laadla Bigad Gaya' became a rage and DOSTANA (2008) became a cult film of sorts. Many derided it for being stereotypical, for being oh-so-fake, but it caught the fancy of the mainstream, and removed the ugliness around the word 'gay' with two A-list stars Abhishek Bacchan and John Abraham romancing it out. But one person who stood was Kirron Kher as the mother who in her own comic way 'accepted' her gay son and his lover. Her scene with Priyanka Chopra was a show-stealer.

5. Arati Mishra from Memories in March

The single mother who comes to know about her son’s sexuality after his death.

A great actress makes a great role even more powerful. MEMORIES IN MARCH (2010) became a defining film about a mother's acceptance of her gay son and his lover, with a powerhouse performance by Deepti Naval and a nuanced performance by Rituparno Ghosh as the son's lover.

6. Shubhangini from Margarita with a Straw

Margarita With a Straw / Via

A modern-age mom who despite her health condition never flinches her support and love for her differently-abled daughter.

MARGARITA WITH A STRAW (2014) made a bold statement with Kalki Koechlin playing a character of a bisexual woman who has cerebral palsy. Her sexuality was very much part of her life and it was in your face, making no attempts at concealing it in the closet. Revathi as the mother brought in a sensitive, nuanced performance that was all about total acceptance without creating being ruckus. She defined the contemporary mother who doesn't care for the society, but only for her child.
