How To Become An SNL Castmember In 8 Easy Steps

Becoming an SNL castmember is a dream of many comedians. And here’s the definitive guide on how to make that dream come true!

1. Get Started Early

It can take years of comedians to find their voice. So get started now. Do open mics, take sketch classes, do improv, write constantly. Do comedy!

2. Move To A Big City

New York, Chicago and Los Angeles are the Big 3 of Comedy cities. They have the most open mics, and comedy clubs as well as the most comedy schools. The UCB, Second City, Groundlings, iO are all in these cities. More opportunities = more chances to make it big.

3. Work Hard

Being funny is important, but learning how to use that funny and make it better and better is even more so. People like Tina Fey and Will Ferrell had to learn and work super hard before they got a chance.

4. Take Classes At Either UCB, Second City or Groundlings

If you look at the numbers for the last couple of years of where SNL cast members come from they’ve mostly performed or taken classes at Second City, UCB or Groundlings. UCB, especially, seems to be gaining a lot of influence with Lorne Michaels. Read a whole article about it here

5. Don’t Take A Writing Job At SNL

In the last 15 years only Jason Sudeikis and Mike O’Brien have become cast members after writing for the show first.

6. Start A Sketch Group

Lorne Michaels, seems to be becoming a fan of hiring sketch groups to work with SNL. He first tried it with The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone and Akiva Schaffer) and recently did it with 3/4 of the sketch group Good Neighbor (Beck Bennet, Kyle Mooney and Dave McCary)

7. Work On A Couple Of Impressions

SNL loves to pull out the impression-reel sketches. So make sure you can do a couple, preferably of pop-culture figures

8. Pray To Whatever God You Hold Dear

Even if you do all these things, you probably won’t get on SNL. Jim Carrey didn’t, Steve Carell didn’t, Lisa Kudrow didn’t and neither did Donald Glover. But hey, they all went on to big things too!
