A Brief Intro To Your New Olympic Sport: Slopestyle

Any sport Bob Costas called “Jackass inspired” has to be awesome right? Let’s take a look.

1. Skis or Snowboard?

Both! It started out as a snowboarding event but skiers soon took it up as well and both will be in the Olympics.

2. Where Did It Come From?

It started out in snowboarding competitions but the Winter X-Games made it popular.

3. So What Is It?

Slopestyle is essentially a downhill obstacle course. The competitors try to get the biggest air while also doing tricks off the obstacles. The emphasis in slopestyle is to perform as many different tricks as possible, not just doing the same thing over and over.

5. So Who’s Expected To Win?

The dude you see above, Shaun White. White has won gold in the halfpipe at the last two competitions and is expected to take the gold in both this year as well.

6. What Are Those Things They’re Jumping On/Over?

Good question! There are a bunch. There’s the:

7. Kickers:

Known as ramps/jumps to the lay person. Generally about 20 to 80 feet long.

8. The Jib

Can be straight or curved or wavy.
